The modern reflex has become strange: before even correcting the basics, we want to measure the details. A symptom appears, and we immediately seek a hormonal panel, a genetic test, a microbiota analysis, micronutrient assays, a functional consultation, a stack of supplements. Curiosity is legitimate. But biologically, this logic can become absurd.
A body that sleeps poorly, eats badly, digests poorly, lives under stress, lacks protein, lacks salt, alternates sugar and fatigue, does not necessarily provide a deep snapshot of your true biology. It mostly provides a snapshot of a disordered organism.
Before seeking subtlety, sometimes you need to restore silence.
The Body Speaks Better When the Noise Lowers
Athletic Carnivore calls this reducing dietary noise. This noise comes from glycemic spikes, ultra-processed foods, snacking, coffee replacing real energy, lack of sleep, false satieties, “healthy” products that trigger insulin again, poorly timed training, stress pushing cortisol all day long.
In this context, assessments can become difficult to interpret. Does a low T3 come from a real thyroid problem or prolonged stress? Does elevated ferritin indicate iron overload or inflammation? Is disrupted cortisol due to pathology or a lifestyle that never lets the nervous system calm down? Is fatigue caused by a rare deficiency or a common lack of protein, salt, calories, and sleep?
Before answering, you must create conditions so that the answer makes sense.
One Year Is Not a Punishment
Saying “one year” may seem long. But it’s not an arbitrary timeframe. It’s the time needed to observe several biological cycles: seasons, sleep, training, weight, digestion, mood, strength, libido, female cycle, professional stress, vacations, illnesses, periods of load and recovery.
In three weeks, you often see a reaction. In three months, an adaptation. In one year, you begin to see a trajectory.
A well-managed low carb, progressive carnivore, or lion’s base diet can already clarify many things: hunger, blood sugar, digestion, inflammation, nervous stability, reactions to dairy, egg tolerance, fat needs, protein needs, electrolytes, sleep. This period is not about rejecting functional medicine. On the contrary, it allows you to approach it with cleaner data.
The Trap of Premature Diagnosis
Many people build a biological identity before stabilizing their terrain. “I’m intolerant to everything.” “I have a hormonal problem.” “My microbiota is destroyed.” “My thyroid is shot.” Sometimes it’s true. Sometimes it’s just a body saturated with incoherent signals.
The danger of premature diagnosis is that it freezes the person. We pile up explanations, supplements, protocols, but don’t fix the foundations. A poorly nourished body doesn’t always lack an advanced protocol. Sometimes it just needs meat, salt, sleep, and regularity.
It’s less spectacular. It’s often more effective.
What to Observe Before Going Further
During this period, the goal is not to “stick to a diet.” The goal is to observe. What happens when sugar disappears? When meals become denser? When dairy is removed then reintroduced? When salt is adjusted? When evening training is replaced by walking? When coffee decreases? When sleep returns?
This is where the Athletic Carnivore approach becomes interesting: it doesn’t just ask which food is good or bad, it seeks to understand what that food triggers in you.
Real functional work often starts here. Not in the test, but in structured observation.
Advanced Medicine Becomes Useful When the Basics Are No Longer Enough
Of course, there are situations where you shouldn’t wait: severe symptoms, unexplained weight loss, significant pain, neurological signs, severe disorders, medical emergencies, known pathology. But for many people drifting in slow metabolic decline, the priority is not to start with the most sophisticated lab. It’s to remove what clouds everything.
After a year of a coherent foundation, questions become smarter. If fatigue persists despite sleep, protein, salt, sufficient energy, and glycemic stability, the thyroid may deserve a closer look. If digestion remains poor despite dietary simplification, then the microbiota, bile, histamine, or other avenues become more relevant. If the lipid profile remains strange despite improved terrain, ApoB, thyroid, inflammation, genetics, and liver are read differently.
Functional medicine is powerful when it answers a real question. It becomes confusing when it tries to compensate for a biologically incoherent life.
The real question is therefore not: “Which test should I do now?” It is: “Have I already given my body enough stability for its signals to finally become readable?”
