A diet may seem coherent as long as the world supporting it remains standing. As long as shelves are stocked, supplements arrive on time, fortified foods exist, cold chains function, harvests are organized, transportation crosses continents, and one can build a plate with products from invisible systems, many dietary choices appear autonomous. But in a scenario of total breakdown, nutrition ceases to be an opinion. It reverts to a raw biological equation: find energy, usable proteins, micronutrients, salt, water, and preserve enough nervous and muscular strength to keep acting.
It is within this logic that the statement sounds harsh: in a doomsday scenario, carnivores would survive more easily, while strict vegans would quickly face the limits of their model. Not because a vegan individual would necessarily be weak, less intelligent, or incapable of adapting. That would be an oversimplification. The real issue is not the person. The problem lies in the degree of dependency of the food system they have chosen.
The carnivore, in its most primitive form, relies on a direct logic: an animal provides meat, fat, offal, bones, collagen, sometimes blood, marrow, tendons, and a nutritional density difficult to match with wild plants or isolated plant stocks. The strict vegan depends on a much more fragile combination: plant diversity, regular calorie access, cooking, soaking, preparation, supplementation, fortified foods, storage, favorable seasons, and often organized agriculture. In a stable world, this complexity can be managed. In a collapsed world, each layer of complexity becomes a breaking point.
The first factor is energy. In survival, the body does not seek to uphold a dietary philosophy. It seeks to maintain temperature, support the brain, fuel muscles, preserve organs, manage stress, and avoid collapse. Animal fat then becomes a strategic resource. It is dense, portable, satiating, useful when meals become irregular, and precious when physical effort increases. A fatty piece, marrow, tallow, eggs, fatty fish, or a rich broth provide concentrated energy in a small food volume. Conversely, many wild plant resources are bulky, fibrous, seasonal, low in calories, or difficult to digest without long cooking.
This is where modern discourse on plants clashes with an older reality. Eating plants in a developed society does not mean surviving on what nature spontaneously offers. Lentils must be harvested, stored, soaked, and cooked. Cereals must be cultivated, threshed, milled, and preserved. Seeds and nuts are not available year-round and often require precise territorial access. Fruits are seasonal. Tubers are not everywhere, and some require preparation or cooking. Nature is not a 24/7 organic aisle.
The second factor is protein. A body in survival cannot long tolerate an approximate protein intake, especially if it must walk, carry, hunt, chop wood, build, defend, or endure cold. Muscle mass becomes a life insurance. It is not merely aesthetic or athletic. It enables force production, joint protection, posture maintenance, blood sugar stabilization, recovery after effort, and resistance to wear. Animal products provide complete proteins, directly usable, in high density. The vegan model can supply protein under normal conditions but demands more volume, food combinations, preparation, and regularity. In breakdown, this regularity is precisely what disappears.
The third factor is micronutrition. The issue of B12 alone almost suffices to show the fragility of strict veganism outside civilization. In the modern world, it can be compensated by supplementation or fortified foods. But this solution assumes laboratories, industry, packaging, distribution, stable information, and continuous access. When these elements vanish, the strict vegan diet loses one of its invisible pillars. The carnivore naturally finds B12 in animal products. It also finds more bioavailable iron, zinc, fat-soluble vitamins, cholesterol, amino acids, and, if consuming the whole animal, a broader range of nutrients than lean meat alone.
The fundamental difference is therefore not just between “meat” and “plants.” It is between a food model that can revert to territorial sourcing and one that often depends on a network. The survival carnivore can eat local: game, fish, eggs, small animals, domestic ruminants if livestock still exists, offal, fat, broths, marrow. Their diet can approach ancestral functioning: waste nothing, use fat, consume organs, preserve by drying, smoking, or salting, adapt catches to season and territory. The strict vegan, to remain strictly vegan, must find enough edible, digestible, energetic, and complementary plants in an environment not designed to provide a balanced menu.
We must also consider the nervous system. During collapse, chronic stress becomes permanent. Cortisol rises more easily. Sleep becomes irregular. Fear, cold, danger, uncertainty, and physical effort increase recovery needs. In this context, a diet that stabilizes hunger, limits glycemic rollercoasters, and provides dense energy can become a major advantage. A person adapted to low carb or carnivore often functions better with spaced meals, less dependence on frequent carbohydrate intake. They can use fat as fuel, tolerate imposed fasting periods, and maintain more stable energy when food is not available at fixed times.
This point is often misunderstood. The issue is not that carbohydrates are impossible to use. The question is what happens when carbohydrates become unpredictable. In a modern world, one can count on rice, pasta, bread, fruits, juices, bars, legumes, and processed products. In breakdown, this abundance disappears. A body accustomed to functioning almost exclusively on regular carbohydrate intake may experience food irregularity more violently: cravings, energy crashes, irritability, reduced clarity, difficulty sustaining effort. Conversely, a metabolism already trained to use fats has a wider margin of adaptation.
Digestion also becomes a survival criterion. Many plants require preparation to be better tolerated. Some contain irritating or antinutritional compounds; others are simply too fibrous or too low in energy to support an active adult. In modern comfort, one can sort, test, cook, ferment, choose, avoid. In survival, mistakes cost more. An unknown, poorly prepared, or overconsumed plant can cause serious digestive problems. Unstable digestion, in a context where clean water is scarce and mobility is necessary, is not a detail. It is a threat.
The carnivore is not invulnerable either. A carnivore who cannot hunt, fish, preserve, butcher, salt, make fire, or recognize contamination signs will not survive by their dietary label alone. A robust, trained, disciplined vegan, an excellent botanist, and highly skilled in autonomy can survive longer than a sedentary carnivore dependent on vacuum-packed steak and unable to manage reality. Survival does not reward nutritional identity. It rewards adaptation.
But if we talk about the dietary model itself, the advantage remains on the animal side. Because the animal concentrates what the body seeks when the world grows scarce: energy, complete proteins, micronutrients, satiety, repair materials, density, simplicity. Plants can complement according to seasons and territories but become much harder to transform into a complete diet when infrastructure disappears. The problem with strict veganism is therefore not its intention. It is its dependency on a sufficiently organized world to make that intention viable.
Here, moral debate fades before physiology. In a society of abundance, one can defend principles, optimize macros, choose exclusions, compensate deficiencies, and intellectualize nutrition. In a broken society, the body returns to fundamental priorities. It does not ask if a calorie is ideologically pure. It asks if it allows standing, thinking clearly, repairing tissues, maintaining warmth, sleeping despite stress, and starting again tomorrow.
The real question is therefore not: “Who is right in the modern debate between carnivores and vegans?” The real question is deeper: which dietary model remains functional when artifices disappear? And on this point, the carnivore is not just a diet. It becomes a reading of modern fragility. It shows that a diet can seem advanced while being extremely dependent, and a diet can seem primitive while being biologically robust.
If the world collapsed, many dietary certainties would collapse with it. There would remain water, cold, hunger, effort, fear, disturbed sleep, tiring muscles, a brain that must decide, a body demanding real fuel. In this context, a complete, fatty, local animal diet used without waste would have a coherence that few strictly plant-based systems could maintain long.
And perhaps this extreme hypothesis reveals something very current: is our diet truly adapted to our biology, or only made possible by the fragile comfort of the modern world?
