The dominant popular belief rests on a binary reflex: avoiding the sun mechanically protects health. Yet biology never operates in binaries. Lindqvist reports that in his cohorts, active sun exposure habits are associated with reduced thrombosis risk, lower future risk of type 2 diabetes, and decreased cancer mortality among the most exposed subjects. This does not mean UV radiation is harmless. It means that systematic avoidance can itself become a risk factor by depriving the body of essential biological signals.

Nitric Oxide, Vitamin D, and Cortisol

The first major mechanism discussed is vascular. Sun exposure increases the bioavailability of nitric oxide. This molecule causes vasodilation, lowers blood pressure, and can thereby reduce overall cardiovascular load. When we talk about the sun, we also talk about the endothelium, vascular tone, thromboembolic risk, stroke, and heart attack.

The second mechanism is endocrine-immune. Vitamin D produced by UVB exposure is not merely a marker of good health but an active immune signaling agent. In the interview, Lindqvist describes it as an immunomodulator that makes the body less prone to attacking its own tissues. He also associates it with better cancer prognosis, explaining that it promotes cellular differentiation.

The third mechanism is neurobiological. The sun does not act only on the skin. It also affects stress levels and psychological tone. Lindqvist mentions reduced stress and increased serotonin with sun exposure. Lower stress indirectly modifies the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Practically, this impacts cortisol dynamics, a key hormone for adaptation but also a driver of metabolic dysregulation when chronically elevated.

The False Prudence of Oversimplified Messages

A directive like “avoid the sun” seems simple. But in biology, simplicity of instruction is not proof of truth. Lindqvist emphasizes that health authorities want an easy message, while reality is more complex. He advocates a more nuanced approach: avoid excess and overexposure, not exposure itself.

Short-term and long-term perspectives tell different stories. In the short term, UV excess can cause erythema, DNA damage, local inflammation, and increased risk of skin lesions. In the long term, however, systematic avoidance can promote chronic deficiency in beneficial exposure, especially in low-sunlight countries.

Vitamin D supplementation can be helpful but does not replicate all the sun’s effects, particularly those related to nitric oxide. An isolated nutrient does not automatically replace the full biological context in which it is produced. The pill does not always substitute for the environmental signal.

The Real Question

The core issue is more uncomfortable than the usual public narrative. The sun can increase certain skin risks. That is true. But absence of sun, especially in environments with scarce light, can also deteriorate vascular, immune, metabolic, and psychological health. What threatens health is not only excess but also chronic deprivation of a fundamental biological signal.

The real question is no longer whether we should fear the sun. The real question is far more unsettling: how many modern disorders do we perpetuate by turning a biological necessity into a danger to avoid?
