Cortisol has a bad reputation. It’s blamed for causing weight gain, muscle breakdown, sabotaging sleep, raising blood sugar, and making people nervous. All of this can be true in a chronic context. But for athletes, especially carnivore or low-carb athletes, this interpretation is too simplistic. Cortisol is not the enemy. It is a hormone of mobilization.
The problem isn’t that it rises. The problem is when it doesn’t come back down.
A Hormone Designed to Act
During physical exertion, the body must make energy available. Catecholamines increase, heart rate accelerates, the liver releases glucose, fatty acids circulate, and the nervous system prepares to perform. Cortisol supports this mobilization. It participates in gluconeogenesis, meaning the production of glucose from lactate, glycerol, and amino acids.
For a carnivore athlete, this mechanism is fundamental. The absence of large amounts of dietary carbohydrates does not mean an absence of glucose. The body knows how to produce what it needs. It can preserve glycogen for intense efforts, use more fat at rest, and mobilize glucose when action demands it.
Performance is therefore not contradictory to the carnivore approach. It simply requires understanding that metabolism is not fixed in permanent ketosis. It alternates.
When Cortisol Becomes a False Fuel
The danger arises when cortisol becomes the main energy source day-to-day. Some athletes believe they are in good shape because they feel stimulated. They train hard, drink coffee, eat too lean, sleep little, under-salt their food, push intensity, and interpret their internal tension as motivation.
In reality, they live on neurological drip-feed.
Cortisol maintains blood sugar but at the cost of systemic stress. Sleep becomes light. Muscle recovery slows. Libido drops. Injuries increase. Digestion becomes strained. Mood becomes more reactive. The person is not truly performing. They are compensating.
In a poorly calibrated carnivore approach, this scenario is common. Too much lean protein, not enough natural fat, insufficient sodium, excessive fasting, too much coffee, too much training. The body is not optimizing. It is on alert.
The Role of Fat and Salt
For the carnivore athlete, energy cannot come solely from protein. Proteins build, repair, and support gluconeogenesis. But if they become the only energy base, the body can enter metabolic tension. Natural fat from meat, marbled cuts, egg yolks if tolerated, marrow, suet, or fatty fish become tools of stability.
Salt is equally central. When insulin drops, the kidney retains less sodium. An athlete who sweats, trains, and eats low carb can lose electrolytes much faster. Fatigue, palpitations, low blood pressure, underperformance: the problem is not always a lack of carbohydrates. It is often mineral.
Reading Cortisol Through Symptoms
You don’t judge cortisol by an idea. You read it in the body. Nighttime awakenings. Sudden waking at 3 or 4 a.m. Difficulty calming down after training. Nervous hunger. Coffee indispensable. Irritability. Feeling cold. Decreased libido. Loss of performance despite more effort. These are signals.
This is where the Athletic Carnivore approach becomes interesting: it doesn’t just ask if you are carnivore, but how your nervous system tolerates this carnivore lifestyle. Some explosive profiles need lots of meat, salt, structure, but also real recovery. Some anxious profiles must avoid late intensity, aggressive fasting, and overly strict restriction.
Cortisol Must Rise, Then Fall
A healthy athlete is not one without cortisol. It is an athlete capable of ramping up intensity and then returning to calm. Mobilization then repair. Effort then sleep. Stress then parasympathetic activation. This alternation builds performance.
Cortisol is an ally when it serves action. It becomes a problem when it replaces stable energy. The real question is not: “Do I have too much cortisol?” It is more precise: does my body use cortisol to perform, or to survive my own protocol?
