Carnivore Insights: When Old Myths Outweigh Biology

Fibers, kidneys, constipation, brain, saturated fats: many carnivore critiques stem from misunderstandings of metabolism.

"I tried carnivore, but I had to stop." This phrase comes up frequently. Then the explanation follows: constipation, kidney fears, lack of fiber, brain needing carbohydrates, animal fats clogging arteries, blood type incompatible with meat. Over time, one might think carnivore is a biological minefield.

But when you truly listen, a different picture emerges. Many people haven’t really tried carnivore. They’ve tried an improvised, lean, poorly salted, misunderstood version, sometimes mixed with cheese, coffee, sweeteners, cheat meals, too much fasting, and too little real food. Then, they attributed their symptoms to the diet instead of reading what their body was telling them.

The first myth concerns fibers. It’s often repeated that fibers are essential for bowel transit, as if the intestine were a pipe that needs scrubbing with plants. Yet, stool volume largely depends on unabsorbed residues. When a diet consists of highly bioavailable animal foods, there is less waste. Less stool does not automatically mean constipation. True constipation involves difficulty, pain, discomfort, hard stools, and a sensation of blockage—not just going less often.

When real constipation appears at the start, the cause is often elsewhere: lack of fat, insufficient salt, poor hydration, too abrupt a transition, stress, or too low protein intake. A carnivore diet made of chicken breasts and coffee is not a well-formulated carnivore diet. Fats stimulate bile, support energy, and ease transit. Without them, the diet becomes dry, nervous, and uncomfortable.

The second myth concerns proteins and kidneys. For someone with pre-existing kidney disease, protein intake must obviously be managed carefully. But in a healthy adult, the idea that animal proteins automatically damage kidneys is a caricature. Increased kidney filtration after a protein-rich meal is not necessarily damage; it’s a functional adaptation. The real modern kidney poisons are often more mundane: diabetes, hypertension, chronic high blood sugar, metabolic syndrome.

The third myth concerns the brain. Yes, some cells use glucose. No, that doesn’t mean you must eat bread, pasta, or sugar to feed your brain. The liver produces glucose via gluconeogenesis when needed. In low-carb or carnivore contexts, the brain also uses ketone bodies, a stable fuel that can reduce energy rollercoasters in some people.

The fourth myth concerns animal fats. For decades, they have been linked to clogged pipes. But arteries are not kitchen pipes where fat sticks like grease. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory, immune, oxidative, metabolic process. It involves the endothelium, lipoproteins, blood pressure, glycation, smoking, insulin, and inflammation. Reducing it all to "saturated fat equals clogged artery" is an oversimplification turned dogma.

The fifth, more absurd myth is blood type. The idea that blood type dictates a specific diet had marketing success but does not explain an individual’s digestive, enzymatic, hormonal, and metabolic physiology. Your blood type doesn’t decide if cheese blocks you, if coffee overstimulates you, if lack of salt tires you, or if dairy fuels your cravings.

This is where the Athletic Carnivore approach becomes interesting: it doesn’t just ask which food is good or bad; it seeks to understand what that food triggers in you. Carnivore is not a meat religion. It’s a tool for radical simplification. We remove dietary noise to see what remains: hunger, energy, digestion, sleep, skin, pain, mood, performance.

But a poorly used tool yields poor results. Too lean, you lack energy. Too little salt, you get palpitations, fatigue, cramps, brain fog. Too much cheese can block weight loss and reignite cravings. Too much coffee confuses stimulation with vitality. Too much fasting on an anxious profile raises cortisol. Too fast a transition on a damaged system turns a stabilization strategy into extra stress.

So the problem isn’t always carnivore. The problem is often the ignorance of those who criticize it, but also of those who practice it haphazardly. A serious method must explain mechanisms: proteins to rebuild, fats to stabilize, salt to support transition, lion’s diet as a temporary reset, reintroductions to identify triggers.

Carnivore eating forces us to move beyond slogans. It forces us to see the body as a system. And that’s precisely what disturbs: it removes classic nutritional excuses and highlights the difference between repeating what you’ve heard and understanding what’s happening.

The real question isn’t "Is carnivore extreme?" The real question is: what value does criticism have when it ignores the very biology it claims to defend?
