Neurotype: The Myth of a Fixed Profile

The concept of neurotype becomes dangerous when it stops being a map and turns into a label. Originally, the idea is useful: understanding that an athlete does not respond simply to a program, but to a program filtered through their nervous system. But as soon as this principle becomes a rigid verdict, it misses the living reality.
A baseline profile does exist. Some individuals are more dopaminergic, more explosive, more drawn to intensity and novelty. Others are more sensitive to structure, control, repetition, volume, or calm. But an athlete never trains solely according to their baseline profile. They train according to their state of the day: sleep, cortisol, blood sugar, inflammation, energy availability, digestion, mental pressure, accumulated fatigue.
This is the difference between the map and the terrain.
A highly dopaminergic athlete may enjoy heavy loads, contrasts, sprints, short and nervous efforts. Yet, after three weeks of poor sleep, excessive coffee, poorly managed cutting phases, personal conflict, too low calorie intake, and disturbed digestion, that same athlete may no longer tolerate what once made them progress. Their nature hasn’t changed. Their state has.
A coach who fails to see this sometimes fuels the problem: more intensity, more stimulation, more pressure. Then they wonder why the athlete becomes flat, irritable, demotivated, injured, or unable to ramp up. The protocol may have been coherent for the profile. It was incoherent for the state.
From a neurobiological standpoint, the distinction is huge. Chronic cortisol disrupts recovery and alters the response to effort. Unstable blood sugar increases perceived fatigue and promotes compensatory eating. Short sleep reduces pain tolerance, insulin sensitivity, fine coordination, and motivational availability. Inflammation blurs fatigue signals. The nervous system does not read a typology sheet. It reads a biological reality.
This is where nutrition becomes a coaching tool, not just an aesthetic accompaniment. A well-constructed carnivore or low-carb approach can reduce blood sugar fluctuations, simplify hunger signals, improve satiety, and sometimes make the nervous state much clearer. But it must be adapted. A carnivore diet that is too lean, too restrictive, too low in salt, or too harsh can worsen the alert state in a profile already under cortisol stress.
Good coaching, therefore, is not about saying: “You are like this, so you will always do this.” It is about asking: “Who are you when you are fresh? Who do you become under stress? Which signals disappear when your nutrition stabilizes? Which exercises build you up and which currently cost you too much?”
A neurotype is a tendency, not a prison. It indicates preferences, vulnerabilities, and motivational levers. But it never replaces observation. The nervous system’s pulse changes. The capacity to endure changes. The response to load changes. The level of stimulation needed changes.
The great modern mistake is selling fixed custom solutions. True customization moves. It adjusts sessions, meals, volumes, intensities, transitions, and recovery phases according to the body’s real state. It does not just classify. It reinterprets.
An athlete does not always fail because of a lack of mental strength. Sometimes they fail because their program keeps addressing the athlete they were, while their current biology demands a different strategy.
And what if the most important question was not “What is your neurotype?” but “In what state is your neurotype trying to survive today?”
