At first glance, Dr. Nelum Dharmapriya’s discourse might seem like a familiar story: a physician discussing low carb, diabetes, and metabolic diseases. Yet, listening closely, something different emerges. Her reasoning goes beyond nutrition. It strikingly resembles computer logic.
Not because she talks about technology, but because she speaks of systems, bugs, overloads, and especially mismatches between an old program and a modern environment.
Who is Dr. Nelum Dharmapriya?
A general practitioner for over 25 years, trained in Scotland and practicing in Australia, she herself comes from the South Asian world, born in Sri Lanka. She is not an outside observer. She speaks from within the system.
Her starting point is neither ideological nor theoretical. It is clinical and personal. In her fifties, despite a low-fat diet, plenty of exercise, and a lifestyle aligned with classical recommendations, she developed abdominal overweight, prediabetes, brain fog, and a worrying coronary calcium score. In other words: the system followed the rules, but the outcome was poor.
This is often where, in both computing and medicine, one begins to suspect a deeper problem than superficial settings.
An ancient program in an incompatible environment
What Dr. Dharmapriya highlights is fundamental: certain populations, notably South Asians, do not respond “normally” to the modern dietary model. Not because they are deficient, but because they are optimized for something else.
She describes a thrifty genetics shaped by centuries of famine, with a reduced capacity for insulin secretion, a tendency to rapidly store visceral fat, a much lower threshold for body fat tolerance, and structurally lower muscle mass.
In computer terms, it’s a program designed to survive on very little running on a system overloaded with fast carbohydrates.
The result is not adaptation but overheating.
Curry, rice, sugar: the bug is structural, not cultural
The most delicate point in her argument is that she does not demonize culture. She explains that the problem is not curry, spices, or even tradition. The problem is the constant carbohydrate intensity, amplified by modernity.
White rice, refined flours, ritual sweets, combined with sedentary lifestyle, migratory stress, lack of sleep, fear of the sun, and almost no strength training, create an environment where the South Asian “metabolic code” crashes much faster than others.
This is not a moral failing. It is a system incompatibility.
Low carb as a patch, not an ideology
What truly sets Dr. Dharmapriya apart from activist rhetoric is that she does not advocate a dogmatic carnivore diet. She speaks of functional, culturally adapted low carb as a software fix.
In her approach, nothing is completely eliminated. The load is reduced. Protein intake, often too low, is prioritized. Traditional fats are restored. Meals are spaced to give the pancreas a break. Fasting is introduced as a system pause. And above all, muscle is put back at the center.
This is exactly what an engineer would do facing an overloaded server: cut unnecessary processes, free memory, reduce demand spikes.
What her work perfectly illustrates is this: metabolism is not a matter of dietary morality but system compatibility.
Two individuals can eat the same food. One functions well. The other collapses. Why? Because they don’t run on the same architecture.
The carnivore or very animal-based low carb diet then acts like a safe boot mode: fewer variables, fewer spikes, less metabolic noise, more stability.
For certain profiles, especially South Asians or those with low carbohydrate tolerance thresholds, this mode can reveal spectacular improvements.
Dr. Dharmapriya’s discourse challenges a very comfortable idea: that nutritional recommendations are universal. She shows that some populations develop diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver earlier, with less overweight, and at thresholds considered normal by Western standards.
In other words: the thresholds are poorly coded.
Without explicitly defending strict carnivore, her reasoning naturally leads there: animal protein priority, traditional fats, massive carbohydrate reduction, insulin stabilization, muscle rebuilding, respect for the nervous system and stress.
It is a carnivore approach by logic, not activism.
Dr. Nelum Dharmapriya does not propose a diet. She proposes a systemic reading of life.
And upon closer inspection, her message goes far beyond the South Asian community. It raises a question every modern individual should ask: is my body malfunctioning because I’m doing something wrong, or because I’m doing exactly what I was told to do on a system that isn’t mine?
It is often at this precise point that carnivore stops being a provocation and starts to look like a technical solution.
