The False Nutritional Shield
The multivitamin market is built on a major biological contradiction: a body capable of finely regulating its micronutrient needs is supposedly dependent on a standardized pill, identical for everyone, regardless of metabolic context.
The promise is simple, almost seductive: fill deficiencies, optimize health, secure modern diets. Yet this approach is based on a misreading of the problem. A micronutrient deficiency is never an isolated phenomenon. It directly reflects a broader dietary dysfunction, often coupled with a deeper metabolic alteration.
The human body doesn’t operate by addition, but by regulation. Absorption, utilization, and storage of micronutrients depend on a precise hormonal environment, notably dominated by insulin, cortisol, and satiety signals like leptin.
Adding Doesn’t Fix Utilization
An inappropriate diet, rich in refined carbohydrates, causes repeated blood sugar spikes, chronic hyperinsulinemia, and low-grade inflammation. In this context, simply ingesting isolated vitamins fixes nothing. It temporarily bypasses a symptom without addressing the cause.
Insulin plays a central role here. When chronically elevated, it disrupts nutrient management, favors storage over utilization, and impairs cellular transport mechanisms. Certain vitamins and minerals then become less bioavailable—not because they’re absent, but because the metabolic environment prevents their optimal use. Adding multivitamins in this context is like increasing substrate quantity without restoring the system’s functional capacity.
Cortisol worsens the problem. Chronic stress, often amplified by significant glycemic fluctuations, alters intestinal absorption, disrupts the digestive barrier, and increases apparent micronutrient needs. Again, supplementation only accompanies an imbalance without ever resolving it.
A Capsule Does Not Replace a Food Matrix
A nutrient-poor, processed, denatured diet cannot be corrected by a capsule. Micronutrients in whole foods are not isolated. They interact within a complex matrix, with cofactors, enzymes, and lipid structures that condition their absorption and effectiveness. Extracting these elements to recombine them artificially simplifies a fundamentally nonlinear biological system.
In the short term, taking multivitamins may create an illusion of nutritional security. In the long term, it fosters psychological dependence and distracts from the real intervention: correcting the dietary model. Satiety signaling, glycemic stability, inflammation reduction, and hormonal optimization remain the true levers.
The inconsistency of current recommendations is glaring. We encourage an unbalanced modern diet while offering compensatory solutions in the form of supplements. This additive logic ignores the integrative nature of human metabolism.
The question is therefore not which vitamins to add, but why the body can no longer function properly with the current diet. As long as this question remains unanswered, supplementation is just a bandage on a fracture. The pill reassures. Biology does not negotiate.
The paradox is even more evident with fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamins A, D, E, and K do not behave like simple numbers on a label. They depend on fat digestion, bile, liver health, cell membrane quality, and the presence of an appropriate food matrix. A capsule swallowed in an inflamed, stressed, insulin-resistant, or bile-deficient body does not produce the same effect as a nutrient contained in liver, eggs, fatty fish, or micronutrient-rich meat.
We must also distinguish between lack of intake and poor utilization. A person may consume enough micronutrients on paper yet show functional deficiency signs: fatigue, slow recovery, irritability, fragile skin, cramps, decreased libido, sleep disturbances. In many cases, the problem is not just what enters the mouth, but what the intestine absorbs, what the liver transforms, what mitochondria use, and what the hormonal system allows.
Magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, and B vitamins illustrate this logic well. Taken separately, they may seem like fine tuning. But in the real body, they work together. Zinc interacts with copper. Iron depends on inflammation and hepcidin. B vitamins participate in energy production, methylation, and nervous system function, but their effectiveness depends on protein availability and mitochondrial health. A multivitamin claims to cover all this in a standardized formula, while biology demands a hierarchy: first reduce what disrupts, then rebuild what nourishes, and finally supplement only what is truly missing.
The carnivore logic does not say all supplements are useless. It reminds us of a more fundamental truth: a supplement should complement a coherent base, not serve as an excuse for a poor, unstable, and inflammatory diet. As long as the terrain remains dominated by processed products, insulin spikes, chronic stress, and degraded digestion, the capsule acts as an alibi. It gives the impression of caring for the body while sometimes avoiding changing what damages it daily.
The real question is therefore not: which multivitamin to choose? The more unsettling question is: why should we swallow an industrial pill every morning to compensate for a diet supposedly meant to keep us alive?
