The Microbiome Is Not a Garden to Fertilize: It’s a Terrain That Responds to Your Lifestyle

We have boxed the microbiome into an overly simplistic idea: more fiber, more plant diversity, more bacteria, therefore better health. This logic feels reassuring because it offers an easy answer to a complex system. But the human body does not work like a planter that only needs compost added. The gut responds to what we eat, of course. But it also responds to what we do with our bodies, how we train, the stress we accumulate, the sleep we lose, the state of our mitochondria, our inflammation levels, and our actual capacity to adapt.

This is precisely what the narrative review by Alsinani et al., published in Nutrients in 2026, brings back to the table. It analyzes 89 original studies on the link between physical exercise and the gut microbiome. The message is not that exercise becomes a magical probiotic. The message is deeper: the microbiome is shaped not only by the plate. It is shaped by movement, intensity, muscle, lactate, bile acids, body heat, intestinal transit, and overall metabolic state.

And this is exactly where the Athletic Carnivore perspective becomes interesting.

Because we don’t view the carnivore diet as merely eliminating carbs or plants. We see it as an attempt to restore a clear biological signal. Less processed food. Fewer glycemic spikes. Fewer potential irritants. More nutritional density. More assimilable protein. More satiety. More stability. But this dietary stability never exists alone. It meets a real body: a body that is trained or sedentary, stressed or calm, adapted to fat or still sugar-dependent, inflamed or already resilient.

The modern misunderstanding stems from this. We talk about the microbiome as if it had fixed, universal needs, almost independent of the individual. We say: “You must feed the good bacteria.” But we forget to ask in what environment these bacteria live. A gut exposed daily to ultra-processed products, insulin spikes, frequent meals, short sleep, chronic stress, and lack of movement does not receive the same signal as a gut in a body that walks, lifts, recovers, eats simple animal foods, and is no longer constantly managing sugar, additives, and excessive fermentations.

The study shows that exercise acts on the microbiome through several mechanisms. During effort, blood is redirected to muscles and skin. Intestinal blood flow temporarily decreases. Body temperature rises. Transit may change. The intestinal barrier can be modulated. Bile acids are influenced. And especially during more intense efforts, lactate produced by muscle can become a substrate used by certain gut bacteria to produce butyrate. This point is crucial: the active muscle communicates with the gut.

Lactate is therefore not just the old “waste” associated with muscle fatigue. It becomes a metabolic messenger. Muscle produces, blood transports, the gut receives, certain bacteria transform, and butyrate can then contribute to intestinal barrier health, inflammatory regulation, and mitochondrial function. Digestive health is no longer just about what enters the mouth. It becomes a consequence of the entire terrain.

For Athletic Carnivore, this idea reinforces a central conviction: you cannot separate nutrition, muscle, and metabolism.

A well-constructed carnivore diet does not seek to “starve” the gut. It aims to simplify the dietary environment to see what the body does when noise is removed. The noise of processed foods. This reversibility should make us think. Many want to “repair their microbiome” with a cure, a probiotic, an added food, a supplement, a short-term strategy. But if the overall environment doesn’t change, the ecosystem quickly returns to what it knows. A sedentary person’s microbiome does not sustainably become an athlete’s microbiome just because they took a product for thirty days. It changes when the whole body changes rhythm, fuel, effort, recovery, and constraints.

The pro-carnivore view does not deny the microbiome. It refuses to use it as an automatic argument against animal-based eating.

We often hear: “Without fiber, your microbiome will collapse.” But this assumes that plant diversity is the only path to a functional gut. Yet the study reminds us that physical activity itself is a powerful determinant of microbial ecology. This does not mean no one ever benefits from fiber. It means we cannot reduce gut health to a single recommendation. For some, more fermentable plants improve comfort. For others, they increase gas, pain, unstable stools, post-meal fatigue, or inflammatory symptoms.

The real question is therefore not: “Are fibers good or bad?”

The real question is: “What signal is your body receiving, and how does your gut respond?”

In a carnivore approach, the gut can sometimes calm precisely because some fermenting, irritating, or reactive substrates are removed. Transit changes. Stool volume decreases. Hunger becomes more stable. Blood sugar varies less. Proteins and fats become the main dietary signals. Bile acids take on a more important role because lipid absorption becomes central. And the study reminds us that bile acids are not only for fat digestion: they are also transformed by the microbiome and can interact with receptors involved in energy metabolism and muscle function.

This point deserves attention. In the classic discourse, eating fat is often seen as a problem to control. In a well-managed carnivore or low-carb logic, fat becomes fuel, a hormonal signal, a satiety support, and a digestive adaptation challenge. But not everyone uses it immediately the same way. Someone coming out of decades of frequent carbs, fear of fat, digestive troubles, or insulin resistance may need adaptation time. The liver, bile, microbiome, mitochondria, and appetite must reorganize. That’s why the same carnivore advice can liberate one person and destabilize another if applied too abruptly or without reading the terrain.

The same logic applies to training.

The study shows that intensity can produce interesting effects via lactate, but it also reminds us that intense exercise can temporarily increase intestinal permeability in untrained people. That changes everything. A well-timed HIIT in an adapted body can be a powerful signal. The same HIIT added on poor sleep, fragile digestion, dehydration, energy deficit, or an already saturated nervous system can become an additional assault.

The body never responds to exercise alone. It responds to exercise in context.

This is where the Athletic Carnivore approach links diet, sport, and neurotype. Some profiles need intensity to feel alive but burn out quickly if they confuse stimulation with recovery. A sedentary, underfed, stressed, poorly trained carnivore body tells a different story than a well-fed carnivore body, rich in protein, adapted to fat, sun-exposed, active, muscular, and capable of recovery. Both may eat “carnivore” on paper. But biologically, they don’t experience the same intervention. One may reduce irritants but doesn’t send enough muscle signal. The other gives the gut, mitochondria, and hormonal system a clearer direction: dietary stability, mechanical effort, recovery, nutritional density.

That’s why individual results vary so much. One person may switch to carnivore and see bloating, cravings, and brain fog disappear. Another may feel flat, constipated, nervous, or less performant. It’s not necessarily that carnivore is good for one and bad for another. It may be that variables differ: fat quantity, salt level, hydration, fat digestion, tolerance to eggs or dairy, carb history, muscle mass, training intensity, professional stress, sleep, medications, hormonal cycle, inflammatory state.

The review emphasizes a often-forgotten point: only a portion of individuals clearly respond to standardized exercise interventions. Responses depend on starting microbiome, diet, genetics, medications, psychosocial context. This idea exactly matches what we emphasize: generic advice is always inferior to reading the terrain.

The danger today is replacing one simplification with another. Before, we said: “Eat less, move more.” Now, sometimes we say: “Feed your microbiome.” Tomorrow, some may say: “Do HIIT to produce butyrate.” But the body never asked for slogans. It asks for coherence.

Yes, exercise modulates the microbiome. Yes, muscle talks to the gut. Yes, lactate can become a useful substrate. Yes, bile acids create a bridge between fat digestion, microbiota, and metabolism. Yes, a carnivore diet can be a powerful strategy to reduce dietary noise and stabilize the terrain. But none of these statements alone suffice.

Because the real question is not whether exercise is good, carnivore is good, butyrate is good, or microbiome is important. The real question is how your body, today, responds to these signals.

A troubled gut is not always a gut lacking something to add. Sometimes, it’s a gut receiving too many contradictory signals. Too much sugar, too often. Too many processed foods. Too much stress. Too little sleep. Too little active muscle. Too much misplaced intensity. Too many fibers imposed on a system already struggling with fermentation. Too many copied advice from another body.

The strength of a well-thought carnivore approach is to start from reality. What happens when we simplify? What happens when we remove probable irritants? What happens when we sufficiently nourish with dense animal foods? What happens when we reintroduce progressive movement, strength, walking, then possibly intensity? What happens when the body finally receives a coherent message instead of an avalanche of superficial corrections?

The microbiome may not be a master to constantly serve. It may be a mirror. A mirror of your diet, your training, your recovery, your stress, your metabolism, and your adaptive capacity.

And what if your gut wasn’t just asking for more bacteria, more fiber, or more diversity, but for a whole body that stops sending it opposing signals?
