They told you that you lack magnesium. But nobody ever explained why.

Diffuse fatigue, twitching eyelids, nighttime cramps, light sleep, irritability, anxiety, brain fog: the popular diagnosis almost always lands the same way. “You’re magnesium deficient.” Then comes the automatic advice: take a capsule, choose a better-absorbed form, increase the dose, switch brands. But the real question remains unasked: why is magnesium missing?
Magnesium is not just a comfort mineral. It participates in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, ATP production, muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve transmission, electrolyte balance, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure regulation, and nervous system stability. When it’s truly deficient, it’s no minor detail. It often signals that an entire physiological terrain is overtaxed.
The first trap lies in testing. Standard blood magnesium levels poorly reflect true reserves because most magnesium resides in bones, muscles, and cells. So you can have a seemingly normal result yet still show functional signs of deficiency. But this should not turn magnesium into a universal answer. A symptom alone doesn’t prove a deficiency; it mainly indicates the need to assess the overall terrain.
Stress is one of the biggest magnesium thieves. When the nervous system stays on high alert, cortisol and catecholamines alter mineral management, increase energy expenditure, and can promote urinary losses. The body consumes more magnesium to produce energy, stabilize nerve transmission, and buffer excitation. The longer the stress lasts, the greater the demand. Then magnesium deficiency itself makes the system more reactive to stress. The cycle becomes vicious: stress, mineral loss, hyperexcitability, poor sleep, even more stress.
Insulin adds another layer. Magnesium is involved in insulin signaling and glucose metabolism. In an insulin-resistant terrain, the magnesium-glucose balance often deteriorates both ways. Magnesium deficiency can worsen insulin resistance, while insulin resistance can promote renal magnesium loss. Again, a capsule won’t fix everything if the diet continues to maintain unstable blood sugar, hyperinsulinemia, and low-grade inflammation.
That’s why many people say, “Magnesium helps me, but the problem comes back.” It relieves a consequence without always correcting the cause. If the diet remains rich in refined carbs, processed foods, late coffee, alcohol, oxidized oils, and confusing digestive signals, the body keeps losing more than it rebuilds. Supplementing then becomes like filling a leaking bucket.
Digestion also matters. An inflamed, irritated, overly fermented intestine or one exposed to antinutrients may absorb minerals less effectively. Phytates found in cereals and some seeds can bind magnesium and reduce its availability. Diarrhea, chronic digestive disorders, certain medications, and alcohol can also increase losses. The problem is therefore not just what you ingest but what the body absorbs, retains, and uses.
In a well-managed carnivore or low-carb diet, the situation changes but doesn’t automatically disappear. By lowering insulin, the kidney initially eliminates more sodium, and water follows. This transition can shift electrolyte balance: sodium, potassium, magnesium. Many cramps attributed to magnesium are actually a broader issue involving salt, hydration, potassium, training load, and recovery. Taking magnesium without proper salting may solve nothing.
Magnesium must be seen as a signal, not just a supplement. If you constantly need it to function, sleep, digest, or avoid cramps, the question becomes: what is draining you? Chronic stress? Coffee? Lack of salt? High insulin? Poorly recovered training? Broken sleep? Alcohol? Disturbed digestion? Insufficient animal intake? Excessive calorie restriction?
A coherent carnivore diet can help by reducing glycemic noise, stabilizing hunger, improving nutrient density, and removing some antinutrients. But it must be properly structured: enough meat, enough salt, enough natural fat, enough energy, and sometimes adapted animal or mineral sources depending on the terrain. Magnesium can be useful, especially in the evening or during stress periods, but it should not become a permanent bandage for a system still running on empty.
So the real question is not “which magnesium to take?” The deeper question is: why can’t your body maintain its electrical calm without constant external help?
