A Healthy Body Knows How to Rise and Then Fall
A body that no longer knows how to calm down is a body beginning to malfunction.
In a healthy organism, things are not meant to stay elevated permanently. Neither activation, storage, nor tension. Metabolism alternates. It mobilizes energy when action is required. It recovers when rebuilding is necessary.

The problem starts when this alternation disappears.
When insulin stays too high, the body no longer easily accesses its reserves. It remains trapped in a pattern of storage, energy dependence, and food compensation. It eats but doesn’t truly stabilize. It has energy but cannot access it properly. It functions but without flexibility.
Classic signs of an unstable terrain quickly emerge: cravings, decreased concentration, the need to eat again, energy fluctuations, difficulty lasting between meals, and the sensation of never feeling fully satisfied.
When Cortisol Keeps the Body in Emergency Mode
Elevated cortisol creates another equally destructive drift. In its proper role, it mobilizes energy quickly and prepares for action. Out of place, it keeps the body on high alert.
The organism remains wired to emergency mode even when it should slow down. It performs in bursts but recovers poorly. It stays tense instead of becoming available for repair.
This is exactly where stability is lost. On one side, too-high insulin blocks the return to true internal energy availability. On the other, too-high cortisol blocks the return to calm. One locks access to reserves. The other locks down relaxation.
In both cases, the body loses its rhythm. It no longer switches cleanly. It remains stuck in a biological limbo, neither truly performing nor truly recovered.
The Trap: Believing It’s a Willpower Issue
This is what makes this imbalance so deceptive. Many believe they lack willpower, when in fact they mostly lack hormonal stability. Many think they simply have a dietary or stress problem. In reality, it’s often deeper: the biological terrain has lost its clarity.
Hunger signals become imprecise. Satiety becomes incomplete. Energy becomes irregular. Sleep becomes less restorative. Recovery becomes less distinct. The body constantly compensates but no longer truly rebalances.
Popular belief continues to oversimplify. Insulin is thought to be just about sugar. Cortisol is thought to be just about stress. This is false by insufficiency. These two hormones are not mere laboratory details. They orchestrate the tempo of life.
When they remain misplaced, too high, too frequent, too persistent, the entire metabolic machinery becomes confused. Storage, fuel access, appetite, alertness, recovery, sleep, and resilience cease to be properly synchronized.
Functional on the Outside, Exhausted on the Inside
In the short term, this produces an organism more fragile than it appears. The person holds on, but poorly. They move forward, but at the cost of constant internal tension. They may even seem functional externally while accumulating deep physiological fatigue internally.
Days become fragmented. Performance becomes uneven. Mood becomes more volatile. Food decisions become more impulsive. And above all, the feeling of stability disappears.
In the long term, the toll becomes heavier. A body that cannot easily return to a deep calm state recovers less well, sleeps less well, rebuilds less well, and tolerates stress less well.
Body composition may deteriorate, but that’s only part of the problem. The real loss is broader: decreased robustness, decreased clarity, decreased recovery, decreased stress resistance, decreased overall biological coherence.
The True Marker: Returning to the Baseline State
This is also why many nutritional recommendations miss the point. They talk about intake, quantities, theoretical balances. They rarely address real hormonal rhythm.
Yet a healthy organism is not just a well-nourished organism. It’s one capable of rising when it must rise, then falling when it must fall. This alternation creates stability—not simply accumulating good dietary intentions.
The true marker of health is therefore not only what we eat, nor even what we expend. The true marker is the body’s ability to return to its baseline state.
When insulin or cortisol remain too high, this ability collapses. And when it collapses, everything else becomes blurred: hunger, energy, sleep, recovery, performance, and even the very perception of what normal functioning is.
The uncomfortable question is the only one that really matters: does your body still function with precision, or have you simply learned to call a chronic state of instability normal?
And what if your problem isn’t lacking energy, but no longer knowing how to return to the state where energy becomes available without tension?
