The word “fruit” reassures us. It evokes nature, color, childhood, freshness, and health. Yet biology is not swayed by imagery. It doesn’t ask whether the sugar comes from soda, candy, juice, or a ripe mango. It receives molecules: glucose, fructose, sucrose. And as soon as these molecules arrive, the body must manage them.

The most repeated phrase is also the most misleading: “Yes, but fruits contain fiber.” That’s true. But fiber does not transform sugar into a harmless nutrient. It can slow absorption, alter the texture of the food bolus, sometimes reduce the speed of the glycemic peak. It does not cancel out the total amount of sugar entering the system. Slowing a wave does not mean emptying the ocean.

Insulin remains at the heart of the issue. When glucose rises in the blood, the pancreas responds. Insulin allows glucose to enter cells, replenishes glycogen, and protects the blood from excess circulating sugar. But this same hormone temporarily blocks fat mobilization. In other words, when a meal or a fruity snack stimulates insulin, the body shifts from burning reserves to using and storing energy.

Fructose is more subtle. It doesn’t raise blood sugar the same way glucose does, which often leads to it being presented as less problematic. But fructose is largely processed by the liver. In a context of abundance, snacking, juices, smoothies, dried fruits, or insulin resistance, this hepatic load becomes a real concern. The liver doesn’t need to be overwhelmed by “natural” sugar to suffer; it only needs to be exposed too often to energy it must transform.

Some modern fruits no longer resemble ancestral wild fruits. They are bigger, sweeter, more available, less seasonal, selected for their sugary pleasure. Grapes, mangoes, ripe bananas, cherries, dates, dried figs, raisins: we’re not talking about small wild berries picked after exertion. We’re often talking about portable sugar concentrates, consumed in bodies already sedentary, stressed, fed year-round, and exposed to other carbohydrates.

Dried fruits are the best example of this illusion. Water disappears, volume shrinks, sugar concentrates. A few dates or a handful of raisins can represent a massive sugar load, swallowed quickly, with the image of a healthy snack. The brain receives the sweet reward, the liver receives the load, insulin organizes what follows. Marketing calls this natural. Metabolism calls it a flux.

Leptin and ghrelin then enter the game. A sugary intake, even natural, can reignite the desire to eat in certain profiles. Sweet taste reinforces reward learning. For someone trying to escape cravings, bingeing, or energy instability, fruit can become the last socially acceptable sugar, the one kept because it seems innocent. And sometimes it’s the very thing preventing true taste sobriety.

This does not mean that an occasional fruit destroys all metabolism. Context matters. A very active child, a glycogen-dependent athlete, a metabolically healthy person, or someone living in a seasonal environment will not respond exactly like an insulin-resistant, overweight, tired, sedentary individual prone to compulsions. The question is never “fruit or poison.” The question is: which fruit, what quantity, what frequency, what metabolic terrain, what goal?

In a carnivore approach, removing fruits has a very clear benefit: it cuts the last emotional link with natural sugar. It allows you to see what happens when the body no longer receives any sweet taste at all. For many, it’s only then that hunger calms, cravings disappear, energy stabilizes, and satiety becomes clear. Fruit was not always the main cause, but it sometimes maintained the memory of sugar.

Modern nutrition likes to oppose natural and industrial. Biology demands more precision. Natural does not mean adapted to your current metabolic state. Natural does not mean without impact. Natural does not mean compatible with fat loss, ketosis, sugar addiction recovery, or advanced insulin resistance.

Fruit can be a food. It can also be a sweet reward disguised as virtue. It all depends on the terrain. If your hunger explodes after fruit, if cravings return, if your belly bloats, if your energy spikes then crashes, if your fat loss stalls, maybe it’s time to stop asking if fruit is “healthy” in general and start looking at what it really does inside your body.

And what if the hardest sugar to give up isn’t the one we know is bad, but the one we keep defending because it grows on a tree?
