Insulin: The Early Warning Signal Before Blood Sugar Rises

Blood sugar often reassures us too soon. A test can show a normal number while the metabolism is already overloaded. This is one of the major blind spots in modern interpretation: we focus on blood sugar but sometimes forget the hormonal effort required to keep it at that level. Insulin can rise for years before blood sugar truly reveals the problem.

Insulin is not the enemy. It is vital. It manages glucose arrival, stores energy, supports certain growth processes, and protects blood vessels from excess circulating sugar. The problem arises when insulin must remain elevated too often to compensate for a dietary environment that constantly challenges the pancreas.

Insulin resistance often begins as an adaptation. Cells, saturated with energy or exposed to too frequent signals, respond less effectively. The pancreas then increases insulin production to keep blood sugar within normal range. From the outside, everything still looks fine. Inside, the cost rises: more frequent hunger, sugar cravings, post-meal drowsiness, abdominal fat storage, and reduced metabolic flexibility.

The misunderstanding comes from the fact that blood sugar is an outcome, not the whole story. Two people can have identical blood sugar levels but very different insulin levels. One maintains that number easily. The other does so at the cost of high insulin production. On paper, they seem comparable. Biologically, they are in very different states.

The liver is directly involved. Under insulin’s influence, it stores, transforms, and regulates. But when it frequently receives glucose, fructose, alcohol, flours, processed foods, and excess energy, it can contribute to a more inflammatory and insulin-resistant environment.

This is where the carnivore approach gains biological relevance. It does not aim to eliminate insulin—that would make no sense. Instead, it seeks to reduce unnecessary stimuli, clarify signals, and rebuild stable satiety. A diet centered on animal proteins, natural fats, salt, and water removes many sources of fluctuation.

The first meaningful changes are not always dramatic. Calmer hunger, steadier energy, less need for coffee, fewer dessert cravings, better tolerance between meals, a flatter belly, sharper concentration—these are often signs the hormonal system is breathing easier.

The real question is therefore not just: “Is my blood sugar normal?” It is: how much insulin does my body need to produce to maintain that normality?
