Appetite: What Your Hunger Is Really Trying to Tell You

Modern hunger is rarely just simple hunger. It can be nervous, urgent, sweet, compulsive, digestive, hormonal, or metabolic. It can arise even when the stomach isn’t empty. It can appear after a supposedly balanced meal. It can disappear when eating meat and then suddenly return after consuming something sweet. The common reflex is to blame willpower. Biology often tells a far more interesting story.
Appetite is a communication system. The brain, gut, pancreas, liver, adipose tissue, and muscles are constantly exchanging information. Ghrelin signals the search for food. Leptin informs about energy reserves, although its signal can become blurred. Insulin indicates nutrient arrival and influences storage. GLP-1 slows gastric emptying and enhances satiety. Dopamine assigns a reward value to certain foods. Cortisol can drive compensatory hunger.
The problem is that modern food distorts this language. Fat-sugar combinations, flours, desserts, salty-sweet snacks, flavored drinks, and ultra-processed foods speak to the brain in an artificially amplified language. They combine quick energy, easy texture, intense taste, and immediate reward.
Blood sugar participates in this cycle. A meal rich in digestible carbohydrates can raise glucose levels, then trigger a significant insulin response. In some profiles, this response then promotes a drop in energy, drowsiness, irritability, or a craving to eat something sweet again. The person believes they lack discipline, while they are caught in a predictable hormonal loop.
Adipose tissue is not just a calorie sack. It is an endocrine organ. When it becomes inflammatory, visceral, or insulin-resistant, it alters hunger, satiety, and energy signals. The liver can also join this conversation by releasing glucose less steadily, especially in contexts of stress, poor sleep, or insulin resistance.
From this perspective, the carnivore approach simplifies signals. A plate of meat, salt, and natural fat does not have the same neurobiological effect as a crispy, sweet, flavored product that can be eaten endlessly. Animal proteins activate deep, mechanical, and hormonal satiety. They require chewing, nourish tissues, provide amino acids, and reduce the search for quick energy.
Salt also plays a frequently underestimated role. During a low-carb or carnivore transition, a drop in insulin can lead to increased sodium loss. Fatigue, strange hunger, or snacking urges can sometimes be mistakenly interpreted as a need for sugar, while the body is actually demanding electrolytes.
True satiety is not about filling the stomach at all costs. It is a state in which the brain stops searching, the body stops sending urgent signals, energy remains stable, and the meal does not immediately trigger the desire for the next one.
