The Problem Is Not Just Caffeine
The issue with these beverages goes beyond caffeine. The real problem is neurobiological. Coffee, black tea, green tea, matcha, mate, “focus” drinks, and stimulant pre-workouts all share the trait of artificially altering the circuits of wakefulness, motivation, and reward.
They don’t generate energy. They change how you perceive your available energy. They don’t create better physiology. Instead, they push your nervous system to operate under external stimulation. That’s the crucial difference.
Dopamine is not simply the molecule of pleasure in a simplistic sense. It is primarily a molecule of motivation, anticipation, seeking, and tension toward action. When a substance artificially increases dopaminergic availability or enhances the reward circuit’s sensitivity to a stimulus, it can make the baseline state feel less satisfying. This is where the trap begins: not a sudden halt in natural production, but a gradual adaptation of the brain to abnormal, repeated, daily stimulation.
Coffee: Masking Fatigue Rather Than Producing Energy
Coffee is the most obvious example. Its caffeine mainly works by antagonizing adenosine receptors. Adenosine signals accumulated fatigue. When caffeine blocks this signal, the brain interprets the situation as reduced perceived fatigue. This blockade then promotes a relative increase in neuronal arousal, with increased activity of neurotransmitters like dopamine and noradrenaline in certain circuits.
That’s why coffee makes you feel sharper, more focused, more ready. But this stimulation comes at a cost. It artificially shifts the vigilance dial, sometimes increases cortisol release, disrupts deep sleep quality even if falling asleep seems unaffected, and establishes a false normality: without coffee, the baseline state suddenly feels insufficient.
This point is fundamental. Many chronic consumers no longer drink to perform better. They drink to return to a level they consider normal, even though it’s already a dependent state.
Tea, Matcha, Mate: Gentler Doesn’t Mean Neutral
Black tea, green tea, matcha, and mate are often marketed as cleaner, more stable, smarter alternatives to coffee. This is more marketing than a major biological distinction.
Yes, there are differences in concentration, absorption kinetics, and associations with other molecules, notably L-theanine in tea, which can partly modulate the perception of the stimulus and smooth the effect. Yes, matcha delivers a significant amount of caffeine in a different matrix. Yes, mate is often experienced as a more “functional” stimulant.
But the central mechanism remains unchanged: you introduce a plant molecule intended to alter the nervous system’s state. The result may feel gentler, more stable, more zen, but it remains exogenous assistance. The brain then learns a simple and dangerous lesson: to be alert, to produce a good level of engagement, to start, to work, to train, it needs a trigger. From there, motivation ceases to be spontaneous. It becomes conditioned.
The Physiological Compensation Loop
Dopamine never acts alone. Repeated nervous system stimulation interacts with cortisol, circadian rhythms, blood sugar, hunger, satiety, and recovery quality.
A stimulant drink taken early may seem harmless. Multiple doses spread throughout the day become a chronic remodeling of the neurohormonal terrain. The deeper the decline in deep sleep, the more insulin sensitivity may degrade, leptin may lose effectiveness, and ghrelin may promote opportunistic eating.
Many people then live in a subtle but very coherent loop: incomplete awakening, coffee to compensate, artificially elevated vigilance, disrupted appetite, unstable energy, a second stimulant dose, diminished sleep, even worse awakening the next day. This is not just a social ritual. It is a physiological compensation cycle.
Tolerance and the Skewed Baseline
When a biological system is repeatedly exposed to the same type of stimulation, it adjusts its response. This can involve receptor sensitivity changes, reduced subjective response to the same dose, or increased stimulation needs to achieve the same perceived effect.
This explains why one coffee becomes two, why a cup of tea no longer suffices, why some switch to double espresso, concentrated matcha, or continuous mate drinking. It’s not just psychological habit. It’s neurobiological adaptation. The problem is not only acute stimulation. The problem is the redefinition of the baseline. By artificially raising vigilance repeatedly, the natural state seems flat, slow, insufficient, even though it may simply be normal.
Wellness Aesthetics Don’t Change the Mechanism
The market loves to package stimulation in a health aesthetic. A refined tea becomes a purity ritual. Matcha becomes a focus weapon. Mate becomes a metabolic combustion tool. An enriched energy drink becomes an optimization strategy.
But biologically, it’s essential to separate what nourishes from what excites. An exciting molecule is not a nutrient. It doesn’t repair sleep deficits. It doesn’t correct protein shortages. It doesn’t restore an unstable metabolic state. It often just masks, temporarily, the consequences of already degraded physiology.
That’s why these drinks are so seductive: they give the impression of an immediate solution without addressing the cause. They improve the feeling before improving the actual state. And very often, they never improve the actual state.
Caffeine-Free Infusions: A Separate Case
Caffeine-free infusions must be distinguished from the rest. A simple herbal tea without caffeine does not have the same neurostimulant profile. Don’t confuse a relaxing infusion with strong coffee, tea, matcha, or mate.
The issue is not drinking something hot, bitter, plant-based, or ritualized. The issue is the presence of molecules capable of manipulating wakefulness and reward circuits. Once this manipulation becomes a daily support for motivation, focus, or good mood, it raises a question of functional dependency. The question is no longer “Is this drink healthy?” The real question becomes: why does your brain need stimulation to reach a state it should produce on its own in a well-regulated organism?
In a Carnivore or Low-Carb Logic, This Question Becomes Central
In a strict carnivore or low-carb approach, this question becomes central because the goal is not only to eliminate carbohydrates. The goal is also to restore stable energy, coherent hunger signals, less fractured vigilance, and motivation less tied to artificial peaks.
When blood sugar stabilizes, meals truly satisfy, sugar dependency recedes, and recovery improves, many discover their need for stimulants diminishes. It’s not magic. It’s logical. A nervous system less assaulted by glycemic swings, less disturbed by cravings, less subjected to constant hyperpalatability often becomes less reliant on crutches.
Coffee and its cousins then reveal their true nature: not performance tools, but external amplifiers used to fill a fundamental insufficiency.
True Energy Doesn’t Need to Be Triggered Multiple Times a Day
The conclusion is uncomfortable but biologically sound. Coffee, tea, matcha, mate, and other trendy stimulant drinks don’t give you better dopamine. They artificially shift how your brain accesses, feels, and eventually demands it.
In small doses, occasionally, in a robust organism, the impact may seem modest. But in a tired, stressed, poorly recovered individual dependent on quick rewards or already metabolically dysregulated, these drinks often sustain exactly what they claim to fix. True energy doesn’t need to be chemically triggered multiple times a day. And as long as you call vitality a state achieved by repeated stimulation, you risk remaining disconnected from what truly stable biology produces naturally—without crutches, without boosts, without subtle doping.
