What many have felt intuitively is now starting to be measured. Dog owners often walk more, interact more easily with strangers, report less loneliness, and some studies link this relationship to better cardiovascular markers. A dog is not a medicine. It is not a magic solution. But it acts on multiple levers simultaneously, making it a systemic regulator.
The first lever is movement. A dog forces you to go outside even when motivation is low. Walking is not a secondary activity. The benefit depends on the relationship, context, available time, capacity to care for the dog, and the person’s temperament. Biology does not like universal slogans. It works through interaction.
But it is precisely this interaction that makes the subject fascinating. The dog acts at the boundary of behavior and physiology. It does not directly modify a hormone like a pharmacological molecule. It modifies living conditions that influence hormones: more walking, less loneliness, more routine, more contact, less rumination, more bodily presence.
