Misunderstanding Physical Activity: The Body Doesn’t Always Lack Exercise, Sometimes It Lacks Adaptation

Everyone keeps repeating that we need to move more. This statement is true but incomplete. It even becomes dangerous when physical activity is turned into a universal remedy without considering the individual’s nervous, hormonal, and metabolic terrain. The body doesn’t just respond to movement; it responds to the balance between the imposed stress and its actual capacity to adapt.
Modern misunderstanding pits two caricatures against each other. On one side, the sedentary person who barely moves, accumulates hours sitting, loses insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, mobility, and biological signaling. On the other, the hyperactive individual who works physically, trains excessively, sleeps little, eats poorly, strains the nervous system, and calls it discipline. These two profiles seem opposed, yet they can end up in the same disorder: unstable energy, disrupted hunger, fragile sleep, inflammation, injuries, decreased motivation, and a confused metabolism.
Lack of movement is a very powerful signal. Muscle is not just a locomotion organ; it is a metabolic organ. It captures glucose, stores glycogen, burns fat, produces myokines, protects insulin sensitivity, supports posture, and informs the brain that the body is alive. When muscle stops working, the body understands that active tissue is becoming less necessary. Energy expenditure drops, glucose circulation worsens, lean mass declines, and the nervous system receives less stimulation.
That’s why just a few days of inactivity can already degrade insulin sensitivity. The problem is not just weight gain; it’s deeper: muscle stops fully playing its role as a metabolic reservoir. The less it contracts, the less glucose it demands, the less it maintains its oxidative capacity. The body becomes more fragile to carbohydrate-rich meals and more dependent on elevated insulin to manage the same intake.
But excess activity is not automatically the opposite problem. Doing too much, too often, too intensely, without sleep, without salt, without sufficient protein, without adequate calories, and without nervous system recovery can create another kind of chaos. Here, the body doesn’t lack signals; it receives too many. Cortisol remains high, the sympathetic nervous system dominates, resting heart rate may increase, libido drops, food cravings explode, tendons complain, and sleep becomes shallow.
Sport is a stress. A good stress when dosed correctly. A bad stress when it stacks on other stresses. Intense training, physical work, sleep debt, mental conflict, nutritional deficits, caffeine, heat, alcohol, heavy digestion, sodium deficiency: for the body, all these add up. It doesn’t separate a weightlifting session from the rest of life. It calculates the total load.
This is where many get it wrong. They think they fail because they don’t do enough. So they add more: more cardio, more sets, more abs, more steps, more restrictions. But if the problem is already cortisol overload, adding effort can worsen the situation. The body becomes more inflamed, hungrier, colder, more irritable, less efficient. The person believes they lack willpower, when sometimes they simply lack recovery.
Within a carnivore framework, this question is central. A nutrient-dense animal-based diet can support physical activity: complete proteins, heme iron, creatine, carnitine, taurine, B12, zinc, salt, stable fats, satiety. But if one eats too little, too lean, too irregularly, or removes carbohydrates without properly compensating with fats and electrolytes, the body may interpret training as an additional threat. The metabolic transition must be respected.
The ideal movement is therefore not always the most impressive. For an insulin-resistant sedentary person, walking daily, progressively strengthening legs and back, and resuming regular contractions can already transform the terrain. For someone nervously exhausted, reducing evening intensity, favoring walking, bodyweight strength, short sessions, and sleep can be more effective than adding HIIT. For an explosive profile, short, intense efforts with good recovery may suit better than endless volume.
True adaptation is measured in the days that follow: sleep, hunger, mood, strength, libido, digestion, pain, desire to train, energy stability. If all improve, the body accepts the signal. If all deteriorate, the signal may be too strong, too frequent, or poorly timed. Training is not punishment. It’s a conversation with physiology.
We must move beyond the simplistic idea “more sport = more health.” Metabolic health comes from the right movement at the right time, with the right fuel, in a system capable of recovery. Sedentary lifestyle removes the signal. Overtraining drowns the system in signals. In both cases, the body loses coherence.
The real question is not: “Am I moving enough?” It is: Is my body able to transform this movement into adaptation, or is it merely enduring it?
