Plants: Ancient Medicine or Nutritional Illusion?

For millennia, humanity has used plants with caution. Today, they are consumed with devotion.
Green smoothies, superfood powders, detox infusions, cold-pressed juices, giant salads, seeds, nuts, spices, extracts, plant supplements. Modern nutritional imagination rests on an almost sacred idea: the more plant-based, the healthier.
But plant biology tells a more complex story.
A plant is not a food passively waiting to be eaten. It is a living organism striving to survive. Since it cannot flee, it defends itself chemically.
Plants Do Not Aim to Nourish Animals
Plants produce thousands of active molecules: alkaloids, lectins, oxalates, phytates, tannins, saponins, cyanogenic glycosides, enzyme inhibitors, bitter compounds, irritants, or neuroactive substances. Some are beneficial depending on dose and context. Others pose problems for sensitive individuals.
Caffeine protects plants against certain insects. Nicotine is a natural insecticide. Capsaicin in chili peppers causes burning sensations in mammals. Tannins disrupt protein digestion. Phytates bind minerals. Oxalates can form crystals. Lectins may interact with membranes and the immune system.
None of this is mysterious. It’s the survival strategy of an immobile organism.
This doesn’t mean plants are “toxic” in a simplistic sense. It means they are biologically active. And an active substance deserves a more nuanced interpretation than “it’s natural, so it’s good.”
Plants Were Often Remedies
In ancient traditions, many plants were used as remedies, not as daily dietary staples. European herbalism, Chinese pharmacopoeia, Ayurvedic medicine, shamanic traditions: plants were seen as substances capable of action.
They could stimulate, purge, calm, induce sweating, cause vomiting, sedate, alter pain, change mood, aid digestion, contract or relax tissues.
In other words, plants were often natural pharmacology.
Modernity has shifted this status. What was once an occasional remedy sometimes became a daily food. What was used with dose, context, and caution became morning smoothies, mandatory salads, green powders, and permanent supplements.
But when a substance acts on the body, dose matters. Frequency matters. The individual’s condition matters.
Antinutrients: The Uncomfortable Word
The word “antinutrient” triggers reactions because it sounds harsh. Yet it describes a biochemical reality. Phytates can reduce absorption of zinc, iron, or calcium. Oxalates can bind calcium and contribute, in some people, to kidney stones. Some lectins partially resist digestion and may interact with the gut. Protease inhibitors can disrupt protein digestion.
Traditional cultures developed techniques to limit these effects: soaking, long cooking, fermentation, sprouting, peeling, discarding certain parts, seasonality. They didn’t always eat plants as modernity sells them: raw, concentrated, blended, in large quantities, year-round.
This is a major difference.
The Problem Is Not the Plant, It’s the Dogma
The Athletic Carnivore approach does not claim all plants are bad. That would be as simplistic as saying all plants are good. Some people tolerate certain plants very well. Some plant compounds may have interesting hormetic effects: mild stress that stimulates internal defenses.
But hormesis is not a free pass. A beneficial stress at low dose can become problematic at high dose. A medicinal plant useful occasionally can become irritating if consumed daily. A food tolerated by one person can trigger bloating, pain, reflux, eczema, fatigue, brain fog, or inflammation in another.
This is where the Athletic Carnivore approach becomes interesting: it doesn’t just ask which food is good or bad; it seeks to understand what that food triggers in you.
The lion’s diet, in this logic, is not a religion. It’s a tool for radical simplification: ruminant meat, salt, water. We remove dietary noise to see what the body tells us when it’s no longer bombarded by variables.
Only then do reintroductions come into play.
Animal Bioavailability and Plant Illusion
Plants can contain nutrients. But presence on a nutrition table doesn’t mean actual utilization. Non-heme iron doesn’t have the same bioavailability as heme iron. Beta-carotene must be converted to retinol. Plant proteins are often less complete and less digestible. Minerals can be bound to compounds that limit absorption.
Animal products often offer a more direct density: B12, retinol, heme iron, zinc, choline, complete proteins, creatine, taurine, usable fats.
Again, this is not ideological. It’s a matter of chemical form, digestion, and individual response.
The Real Question
Plants can be useful. They can be powerful. They can be beautiful, medicinal, aromatic, sometimes protective. But their very power should make us more cautious.
The modern problem is not discovering plants. It’s turning active substances into a daily moral obligation.
So the real question is not: are plants good or bad?
The real question is: does your body use them as food, or endure them as repeated pharmacology?
