Does performance on a carnivore diet really depend on ketones, or on the speed of ATP production?

Many athletes who switch to a carnivore or low-carb diet monitor their ketones as if they were the ultimate performance dashboard. The higher the ketones rise, the more they believe they are adapted. The lower they fall, the more they fear losing something. Ketosis then becomes a reassuring biological proof: if ketones are present, the body should be functioning.

But training success isn’t won solely by having a good ketone level.

It’s won by the ability to produce energy at the right moment, at the right speed, in the right tissue, under the right stress.

And this is precisely where the Athletic Carnivore strategy becomes interesting: not by adding sugar everywhere all day long, as in a classic sports diet, but by maintaining a carnivore or low-carb base to keep insulin low at rest, then using dextrose as a targeted tool around exercise, when the body needs rapid ATP production.

This nuance is crucial.

The problem isn’t whether carbohydrates are “good” or “bad.” That view is too simplistic. The real issue is context. The same glucose molecule has a very different biological meaning depending on whether it arrives in front of Netflix at 10 p.m. in an already insulin-resistant body, or during an intense session where contracted muscles rapidly uptake glucose to produce energy.

In the first case, sugar can fuel storage, cravings, blood sugar swings, and elevated insulin. In the second, it can become working fuel, used in a window where muscle demand is immediate.

That’s why we’re not talking here about returning to classic dietary carbohydrates. We’re talking about a precise, controlled, almost mechanical use: dextrose around exercise—not starchy foods, fruits, cereal bars, juices, or permanent carb meals.

Dextrose is glucose. It doesn’t require complex digestion. It arrives quickly. It follows a simple logic: when intensity rises, the body must produce ATP rapidly. Fats and ketones can provide a lot of energy, but they don’t always respond as fast as a carbohydrate substrate during explosive, intermittent, or highly nervous efforts.

This is where many carnivore athletes ask the wrong question.

They wonder: “Am I in ketosis enough?”

But the real question might be: “Can my body produce ATP fast enough for the demands of my sport?”

ATP is the immediate energy currency of the cell. A heavy set, a sprint, an acceleration, an intense bodybuilding session, a fight, or repeated effort don’t just require “available energy.” They require energy released quickly. Very quickly. Under these conditions, the phosphocreatine system acts first, then glycolysis can take over when effort is prolonged or repeated.

Ketones can be excellent for stability, brain function, low-intensity endurance, daily energy, and metabolic flexibility. But they don’t mechanically replace all energy pathways for performance. Reviews on ketogenic diets and sports often show a mixed picture: strong adaptation of fat oxidation, but sometimes neutral or decreased performance when intensity becomes high.

This is exactly what some carnivore athletes feel.

On a daily basis, they feel better. Fewer cravings. Less energy crashes. Less perceived inflammation. More stable hunger. Better mental clarity. But under the bar, in long sets, during explosive efforts, they become flat. Not destroyed. Not sick. But less sharp. Less powerful. Less able to repeat intensity.

This isn’t necessarily carnivore failure.

Sometimes it’s a sign that the dietary base is good, but the fuel around exercise isn’t yet aligned with the athletic demand.

At Athletic Carnivore, the logic differs from the classic carb-based athlete. We don’t seek to live on carbs. We seek to remain mostly in a low-insulin physiology, nutritionally dense, based on animal products, then use glucose as a punctual tool when the muscle truly needs it.

The difference is huge.

In a typical modern diet, carbs often arrive without effort, without muscle demand, without immediate need. They become a constant metabolic noise. In a targeted strategy, dextrose arrives in a window where the body is contracting, pushing, pulling, running, repeating, producing. The muscle then becomes a much more active glucose sink.

It’s no longer sugar as a reward.

It’s glucose as a performance tool.

And this idea didn’t come out of nowhere. Sports nutrition recommendations have long recognized that carbohydrate intake during exercise can maintain blood glucose, spare some glycogen, and support performance, especially when effort is prolonged or intense. The International Society of Sports Nutrition states that carbs during certain exercises can support blood glucose, glycogen stores, and training adaptations.

But the Athletic Carnivore nuance is not to turn this data into an excuse to add carbs everywhere.

The central point isn’t: “The athlete needs carbs all day long.”

The central point is: “Some efforts require an ATP production speed that ketosis alone doesn’t always optimally cover, especially depending on adaptation level, sport type, and nervous system state.”

That’s why dextrose is interesting. It’s not used to feed a sugar addiction. It’s not used to abandon the carnivore logic daily. It’s used as a punctual lever, around exercise, when the goal is no longer just metabolic stability, but power, repetition, load, speed, or intensity.

A sedentary carnivore doesn’t necessarily have the same needs as a heavy bodybuilding practitioner. A walker doesn’t have the same needs as a fighter. A mild endurance athlete doesn’t have the same needs as an intermittent sport player. Someone already well adapted to low carb doesn’t have the same needs as a former high-carb consumer transitioning. Two people can take the same amount of dextrose and get two different responses.

This is where individual context becomes central again.

For some, a small targeted dose can restore energy without triggering cravings. For others, it can reignite sugar desire. For some, it improves the session. For others, it clouds signals. For some, it helps mainly on heavy or long sessions. For others, it brings nothing because the real problem lies elsewhere: sleep, salt, plasma volume, energy intake, recovery, cortisol, digestion, or overtraining.

That’s why understanding the mechanism before copying the strategy is essential.

Dextrose isn’t a magic solution. It’s a biological test.

It allows asking the body a very precise question: when I provide fast glucose around exercise, does my performance, pump, recovery, nervous focus, and ability to repeat intensity improve without degrading my dietary stability the rest of the day?

If yes, that says something.

If no, that says something too.

Ketone levels alone don’t answer this question. An athlete can have good ketones and lack energy speed. Another can have lower ketones because they use substrates better. Another can function perfectly without any dextrose addition because their sport, adaptation, and context don’t require it.

Performance isn’t read with a single marker.

It’s read in the body’s response under stress.

That’s why the Athletic Carnivore strategy isn’t “anti-carb” in a simplistic sense. It’s anti-unnecessary carbs, anti-permanent carbs, anti-carbs that mask body signals. But it can integrate pure glucose as a targeted tool when effort demands it.

The base remains carnivore: nutritional density, complete animal proteins, natural fats, dietary creatine, heme iron, zinc, taurine, carnosine, B vitamins, simplification of food signals.

Dextrose only adds a strategic layer around exercise.

In other words: we don’t add sugar for reassurance. We test glucose where the muscle can truly use it.

If you’re carnivore, have good ketones, but your performance stagnates, you lack explosiveness, or your sessions become flat, the real issue might not be to raise ketosis even higher. The real issue might be understanding if your body can produce ATP fast enough for your sport’s demands.

Two athletes can follow a carnivore base, use or not use dextrose, and get opposite results. That’s precisely why personalized analysis becomes useful.
