This phrase is everywhere.

"I've been keto-adapted for 10 years."
"Me, for 20 years."
"Me, for 30 years."

As if it were a rank. A metabolic medal. A level of biological expertise.

So allow me a simple response.

I am fifty years old.

And I have been keto-adapted for fifty years.

Just like you.
Just like everyone.

Because contrary to the marketing storytelling that has taken hold in the low carb and keto world, ketosis is not a skill developed after years of dietary practice.

It is a fundamental biological program.

Ketosis Is Present From the Start of Life

A human infant is already equipped at birth to produce and use ketone bodies. Its brain, still under construction, consumes these energetic molecules massively. Not just as fuel, but as raw material to build its neural structures.

Ketone bodies directly participate in the synthesis of brain lipids and the myelination of neurons. In other words, they are involved in the very construction of the brain.

This detail is rarely mentioned in the marketing narratives around keto.

Breast milk itself is a spectacular demonstration of this biological reality. About 50 to 60% of its energy comes from lipids. This composition is no accident. It maintains a metabolic environment favorable to ketone production.

In a breastfed infant, blood ketone concentrations regularly reach levels that many adults today strive to achieve with strict diets.

The reason is simple.

Humans possess natural metabolic flexibility.

The Body Knows How to Use Multiple Fuels

Our physiology is designed to switch between several energy fuels: glucose, fatty acids, and ketone bodies. This system relies on enzymatic mechanisms present in every cell.

Mitochondria oxidize fatty acids via β-oxidation. The liver converts acetyl-CoA into ketone bodies when insulin decreases and carbohydrates become scarce. Muscles, brain, and heart all have the necessary enzymes to use these molecules with remarkable efficiency.

Nothing new.
Nothing exceptional.

This is the foundation of human metabolism.

So why do some talk about "becoming keto-adapted" as if it were a major physiological achievement?

Because modern diets have done one very simple thing: they have reduced our metabolic flexibility.

What Modern Diets Have Blocked

When the body constantly receives carbohydrates, insulin remains elevated. This hormone blocks lipolysis, slows access to stored fat, and inhibits ketone production. Over time, the body becomes dependent on glucose.

The enzymes are still there.
The mitochondria still function.

But the system is underutilized.

When these people suddenly reduce carbohydrates, they experience a transition period: fatigue, low energy, mental fog. This is called "keto-adaptation."

In reality, it is not an adaptation.

It is a reboot.

The body is not discovering anything new. It is simply reactivating a mode of operation it has known perfectly since day one of life.

That’s why the phrase "I’ve been keto-adapted for X years" often sounds like a marketing myth.

It turns a universal biological mechanism into an identity badge.

As if some had reached a superior metabolic state.

The truth is far less glamorous.

We were all born keto-adapted.

The only thing modern diets have managed to do is make us forget that we already were.

So yes, I am fifty years old.

And like every human on this planet, I have been keto-adapted for fifty years.

The real question might not be how long you’ve been keto-adapted.

The real question is much more uncomfortable.

How many years have you spent preventing your own metabolism from functioning as it was designed to?

The Right Term Would Be: Re-adaptation

The nuance is important. Most modern adults don’t suddenly become capable of using ketones. They gradually regain access to a program that chronic insulin, frequent eating, and glucose dependence had relegated to the background. The transition can be real: fatigue, sodium loss, decreased performance, less clear brain for a few days or weeks. But this phase is not the birth of a new biology. It is the reboot of a buried flexibility.

This difference also changes how we judge a carnivore or low carb diet. Someone who feels bad the first week hasn’t proven their body "needs carbs." They often show that their renal, electrolyte, enzymatic, and mitochondrial systems must reorganize after years of insulin stimulation. Salt, water, sufficient protein, appropriate fat, sleep, and well-calibrated exercise intensity then become essential.

Marketing sells ketosis as a destination. Biology presents it more as a door already installed in the body, but one many almost never open. The question is therefore not to build a keto identity. The question is to regain the ability to switch from one fuel to another without panic, without cravings, and without permanent dependence on the next meal.

What if the real metabolic performance wasn’t "doing keto," but no longer being a prisoner of a single fuel?
