Industrial Vegetable Oils: The Real Issue Is More Than Just Hexane

A modern oil may look like a simple food but in reality be the end product of a long, heated, refined, deodorized, and standardized industrial chain. This is the paradox of common vegetable oils: they are marketed as light, neutral, and healthy, yet they often differ greatly from the fats the human body has consumed for most of its history.
The debate sometimes focuses on a striking word: hexane. This solvent, derived from the petrochemical industry, is used to extract more oil from oilseeds such as soy, canola, sunflower, or corn. The process is efficient. It maximizes yield. But it raises a simple question: when a fat requires an industrial solvent, heat, refining, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization to become consumable, can it still be considered a biologically obvious food?
Precision is necessary. Hexane residues in refined oils are regulated and generally very low. The main issue is therefore not to claim that a drop of industrial oil is an acute poison. That would be an exaggeration. The real subject is broader: what is the metabolic quality of a fat that comes from a fragile seed, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, extracted under industrial conditions, and then consumed massively in processed foods?
Polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-6 like linoleic acid, are chemically more fragile than saturated or monounsaturated fats. They oxidize more easily under heat, light, and oxygen. When consumed in large amounts in modern diets—often through frying, sauces, cookies, prepared meals, and snacks—they alter the body's lipid context. The problem is not their existence. The problem is their excess, their potential oxidation, and their omnipresence in an already inflammatory environment.
The body never receives an isolated oil. It receives it in context. An industrial seed oil rarely accompanies a simply salted piece of meat. It more often comes with flour, sugar, starch, breading, additives, flavorings, frying, repetitive eating, and overconsumption. This combination becomes metabolically dangerous: fast carbohydrates, unstable fats, hyperpalatability, inflammation, insulin spikes, cravings, and loss of satiety.
The comparison with animal fats is instructive. Butter, tallow, beef fat, lamb fat, egg yolks, or the fat naturally present in marbled meat do not require petrochemical extraction to be recognized as foods. Their matrix is more direct. They provide fatty acids in an animal context, often with fat-soluble vitamins, cholesterol, phospholipids, and clearer satiety signals. Again, this is not romanticizing. It is recognizing that not all fats speak the same metabolic language.
On a hormonal level, a diet rich in processed products containing seed oils often maintains an unstable terrain. Blood sugar fluctuates, insulin remains stimulated, leptin becomes less readable, ghrelin deregulates, and cortisol can rise when energy becomes nervous rather than stable. Lack of willpower is sometimes blamed. But the body responds to a food environment designed to be consumed quickly, in large amounts, and often.
The carnivore approach restores order to this signal. It removes much of the industrial oils without even needing to obsess over it. When the plate returns to meat, eggs if tolerated, fish, offal, salt, water, and natural animal fats, exposure to refined oils mechanically drops. The metabolism receives less noise. Satiety becomes more direct. Digestion becomes clearer. Energy no longer depends on foods that mix gustatory stimulation and lipid fragility.
The real question is therefore not just: is there hexane left in the oil? The question is deeper: why have we normalized fats that require so much industry to enter the plate, when animal fats already exist in a matrix that human biology has recognized forever?
A food is not judged only by its label. It is judged by its origin, its process, its chemical stability, its dietary context, and the signal it sends to the body. And if your oil needs refining, bleaching, deodorizing, and a technical data sheet to appear normal, perhaps your metabolism has already understood that it is not quite so.
