500,000 Years Ago, Humans Ate Mostly Meat

For the vast majority of its history, humans did not shop in supermarkets. They had no refined grains, no industrial vegetable oils, no sugary drinks, no “energy” bars, nor apps to count calories. They lived in a world where energy was costly to obtain, where cold, hunger, travel, and predation imposed a simple rule: the best food was that which provided the most energy and nutrients with the least unnecessary volume.
In this context, animal products held incomparable value. Meat, fat, marrow, organs, skin, tendons, fish, eggs, birds, large herbivores: these resources did not just provide calories. They delivered biological density. And this density likely played a major role in the expansion of the human brain.
Ancient archaeological sites regularly reveal bones bearing marks of cutting, percussion, and fracturing. Humans did not merely take a few muscle pieces. They cracked open bones for marrow, sought fat, consumed organs, and exploited carcasses intelligently. This behavior does not resemble a mere marginal opportunity. It looks like a central nutritional strategy.
The human brain demands enormous energy. It represents a small fraction of body mass but consumes a very large share of resting energy. To support such an expensive organ, a diet based on fibrous plants requires a massive fermentation digestive system. Yet humans have a different digestive tract: a large small intestine for absorption, a less dominant colon than major fermenters, strong gastric acidity, and the ability to efficiently utilize animal proteins and fats.
Animal products provide what plants struggle to supply in immediately usable form: B12, heme iron, zinc, retinol, choline, DHA depending on marine resources, creatine, carnosine, taurine, and complete proteins. They do not require the same conversions, do not rely on massive fermentation, and supply the body with materials compatible with a large brain, a complex nervous system, and demanding physical activity.
The modern break is very recent. Agriculture dates back about 10,000 years, a tiny fraction in our evolutionary timeline. Refined flours, industrial sugars, and modern vegetable oils are even more recent. Ultra-processed foods have only invaded our plates in the last few decades. Our food environment has changed faster than our physiology.
This is where contemporary fear of meat becomes strange. Meat is often portrayed as a suspect food, even though it accompanied human evolution for hundreds of thousands of years. Modern criticisms frequently rely on observational studies where meat is mixed with an entire lifestyle: tobacco, alcohol, sedentary habits, white bread, fries, sauces, desserts, caloric excess, processed products. Blaming meat alone in this context confuses an ancestral food with the industrial environment surrounding it.
This does not mean that all meat, in every context and dose, is automatically ideal. Quality, cooking, origin, freshness, quantity, metabolic terrain, and activity level matter. But biologically, it is absurd to equate a piece of beef, a liver, a sardine, or a lamb chop with modern industrial products built around flour, sugar, and unstable oils.
The carnivore approach should not be seen as a provocative trend. It can be understood as an attempt to remove recent foods to rediscover an older structure: dense animal foods, low carbohydrate load, strong satiety, simplified digestion, and stable energy. This return is not mandatory for everyone. But it forces us to ask a question the dominant discourse avoids: why would the food that nourished our evolution suddenly become the main enemy of our health?
The real fear might be less about meat and more about how quickly we replaced it with foods our biology never had time to integrate.
What if the modern problem isn’t that we eat too much like our ancestors, but that we’ve forgotten what truly nourished them?
