The Omnivore Man: A Late Label More Than a Biological Proof

The idea seems so ingrained that it’s rarely questioned: humans are omnivores. This phrase is repeated in schools, medical offices, documentaries, and nutritional guidelines. It appears simple, balanced, and reasonable. Yet, when examined closely, a troubling question arises: are we talking about solid physiological evidence, or a practical category built from our ability to survive in very different environments?
The issue isn’t denying that humans can eat plants. They can. They have. They continue to do so. The problem lies in confusing capacity, tolerance, adaptation, and optimality. An organism can utilize a food without that food being its best fuel. It can survive using a fallback strategy without that strategy becoming its biological norm.
Historically, the omnivore label was established through a cluster of clues: non-specialized dentition, use of tools, cooking, traces of plant consumption, ecological diversity, observations of hunter-gatherer groups, the ability to eat fruits, roots, tubers, honey, meats, fish, and offal depending on the seasons. This interpretation is plausible. It shows an opportunistic and intelligent species. But it does not prove that the modern animal-plant mix is necessary for human health.
The nuance is huge. Saying humans can exploit multiple dietary niches is not the same as saying their bodies require an omnivorous model to function optimally. Humans can digest starch, but they can also maintain blood sugar without dietary carbohydrates through gluconeogenesis. They can consume fiber, but they lack the massive fermenting apparatus of gorillas. They can eat fruits, but fructose is not an essential nutrient. Conversely, they cannot do without essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, B12, bioavailable iron, zinc, choline, retinol, or DHA without paying a biological price.
This hierarchy of needs is rarely central to the debate. We talk about variety, balance, food pyramids, but avoid the colder question: which nutrients are indispensable, in which forms are they most bioavailable, and which foods provide them with the least conversion, fermentation, antinutrients, or digestive noise?
Omnivory is therefore perhaps less a physiological answer than an ecological description. It says: humans can eat many things. It does not say: all these things are necessary. Nor does it say: all humans tolerate them equally. An insulin-resistant, inflamed, bloated, sugar-dependent, or digestion-sensitive person does not receive plants, cereals, and fruits the same way as a metabolically stable person. The terrain changes everything.
This is where the carnivore perspective becomes interesting. It does not necessarily claim that humans are strict carnivores in the zoological sense, like cats. It asks another question: what happens when you remove the foods most likely to stimulate insulin, fermentation, cravings, digestive irritations, and energy instability, and return to dense, bioavailable, and satiating animal products? For many people, the body becomes clearer: calmer hunger, more stable energy, simpler digestion, perceived lower inflammation, improved recovery.
This result doesn’t prove everything. But it weakens the idea that modern omnivory is an indisputable truth. If you can remove almost all plants and see some markers improve, then these plants may not be as structural as often repeated. If they were indispensable, their absence should quickly reveal a clear biological deficiency. Yet, in many well-conducted cases, the opposite is observed: less noise, more stability.
The real question is therefore not about choosing a flattering label. It is about distinguishing adaptation from optimality. Humans are adaptable, that’s obvious. But adaptability is not proof that all options are equal. A body can compensate for a long time before falling ill. It can tolerate a dietary environment without thriving in it.
What if humans were less “omnivores by nature” and more capable of surviving as omnivores when circumstances demand it? This nuance changes everything because it forces us to move beyond slogans and return to real physiology.
