Modern nutrition has turned fiber into a health symbol. The more fiber, the better. More vegetables, more whole grains, more seeds, more legumes, more psyllium. The message is simple, reassuring, and repeatable. But a message can be popular and still incomplete. Because in the real body, fibers don’t act as an abstract virtue. They act as matter, volume, fermentation, and mechanical signaling.

The problem begins when this advice becomes universal. A fast, low-residue, and tolerant gut may respond positively to certain fibers. A slow, distended, painful, irritable, or congested gut may react exactly the opposite way. The same recommendation can help one profile and worsen another. This is the paradox nutrition often refuses to acknowledge because it forces us to move beyond slogans.

Plant fibers are not digested by human enzymes. They pass through a significant part of the digestive tract before being partially fermented by the microbiota or expelled as residue. This reality is often presented as an automatic benefit. Yet, in a system already under pressure, additional residue is not necessarily a blessing. It can become a burden.

Intestinal peristalsis is a muscular movement. The colon must propel its contents through coordinated contractions. If the content becomes bulkier, more gaseous, more compact, or more irritating, the intestine must work harder. For some, this work stimulates. For others, it blocks. It’s the difference between an engine that needs a bit of load to run and an engine already saturated with an extra trailer attached.

Fermentation is another area of misunderstanding. Yes, some fermentable fibers can feed bacteria and produce short-chain fatty acids. But fermentation also produces gas. In sensitive individuals, this gas distends the intestinal wall, increases pain, triggers spasms, alters motility, and worsens the sensation of a bloated belly. The microbiota is not a religion. It’s an ecosystem that can help or cause suffering depending on the terrain.

Chronic constipation perfectly illustrates this problem. We imagine that more fiber will mechanically push stools along. But if motility is insufficient, if the enteric nervous system is disturbed, if hydration and electrolytes are poorly balanced, if cortisol remains high, if digestion is slow, then adding volume can worsen the burden. Many patients know the result: more fiber, more bloating, more gas, but not necessarily more evacuation.

Conversely, a carnivore or very low-fiber diet can drastically reduce residue. Animal proteins and fats are largely absorbed before reaching the colon. Fecal volume decreases. Fermentation drops. Many report less gas, less urgency, less pressure, sometimes a lower frequency but easier evacuation. This shocks because we have confused “going often to the bathroom” with “good digestion.”

Frequency alone is not a sufficient indicator. Healthy transit is also judged by ease, comfort, absence of pain, abdominal stability, and the sensation of complete evacuation. A body that absorbs more produces less waste. This is not necessarily an anomaly. It is sometimes the logical result of a denser, less residual diet.

We must also consider the foods associated with fiber. Many people don’t consume isolated fibers; they consume cereals, whole breads, legumes, raw vegetables, seeds, powders, fermentable sweeteners, and industrial “fiber-rich” products. These foods come with antinutrients, starches, additives, FODMAPs, lectins, or irritants depending on the case. To blame or praise “fiber” wholesale is to ignore the entire food matrix.

A carnivore perspective does not say all fiber is bad for everyone. It says the human body can function without dietary fiber, and some intestines do better when what ferments and clogs is removed. This is a huge nuance. It does not destroy microbiota research. It simply reminds us that individual tolerance, motility, and real comfort come before dogma.

The right reasoning is therefore not: “more fiber.” The right reasoning is: what problem are we trying to solve? Is it lack of volume, insufficient motility, excess fermentation, nervous stress, lack of salt, lack of fat, poor hydration, or a poorly tolerated food? Without this reading, we treat all intestines with the same rule and wonder why some rebel.

The real question is not whether fiber has a possible place. Sometimes it does. The real question is why dominant nutrition has turned a contextual variable into a universal obligation.
