Plant Fibers and Constipation: When Adding Bulk Worsens the Blockage

You’ve been told your whole life: if your transit slows down, you need to eat more fiber. More green vegetables, more salads, more whole grains, more seeds, more psyllium. The advice sounds logical. If stools don’t pass, add more material to push them out. But digestive physiology isn’t an empty pipe. In some intestines, adding bulk simply increases the traffic jam.
Constipation isn’t just about frequency. It’s about effort, pain, consistency, pressure, gas, the sensation of incomplete evacuation, and motility. A person can have fewer bowel movements without being constipated if evacuation is easy, the belly is calm, and stools are painless. Conversely, someone can have regular bowel movements yet experience a difficult, bloated, irritated, and incomplete transit.
Plant fibers are indigestible by our enzymes. They mostly pass through the intestine intact, then exert two main effects: some retain water and increase volume, others ferment under the microbiota’s action producing gas and metabolites. These mechanisms can be helpful in certain contexts. But they can become very problematic when the intestine is already slowed, distended, or hypersensitive.
The paradox appears in chronic constipation. If motility is weak, peristalsis lacks strength, the enteric nervous system is disturbed, or the person lives under chronic stress, adding fiber doesn’t necessarily fix the engine. It sometimes only increases the load to move. More bulk, more fermentation, more gas, more pressure. The advice meant to free you ends up trapping you.
Some clinical observations have shown that significantly reducing fiber intake can improve symptoms in constipated patients. This result shocks because it contradicts the dominant recommendation. Yet it is biologically coherent: if the main problem is congestion, removing some residue can reduce the mechanical workload imposed on the colon.
Fermentation deserves special attention. Fermentable fibers can nourish certain bacteria, produce short-chain fatty acids, and contribute to an active microbiota. But in a sensitive person—bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, dysbiosis, or slow transit—fermentation can become a source of distension. Gas stretches the intestinal wall, activates nerve receptors, increases discomfort, and can disrupt transit coordination.
In this context, the carnivore diet offers a simple hypothesis: less residue. Animal proteins and fats are largely absorbed in the small intestine. What reaches the colon is much less. Fecal volume decreases. Gas often decreases. Abdominal pressure can drop. Transit may become less frequent but more comfortable. This doesn’t fit the cultural image of “good transit,” but it may correspond to more efficient digestion.
Two situations must be distinguished. If a person eats carnivore, goes less often to the bathroom, but doesn’t strain, doesn’t experience pain or bloating, and feels light, this isn’t necessarily constipation. It may simply be less waste. Conversely, if they have hard stools, pain, a sensation of blockage, fatigue, cramps, or insufficient hydration, factors like salt, water, fat, total quantity, stress, magnesium, and digestive adaptation need to be examined.
The fiber dogma also overlooks the diversity of individual conditions. Some tolerate plants very well and benefit from moderate fiber intake. Others react strongly to vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds, fermentable sweeteners, or fiber supplements. The problem isn’t declaring fibers good or bad. The problem is prescribing them as if all intestines function the same.
The real question isn’t “Do I have enough fiber?” It’s: Does my intestine need stimulation or decluttering? Bulk or rest? Fermentation or simplification? As long as all constipation is answered with more plants, the real mechanics of the digestive tract are ignored.
What if, for some bodies, the solution isn’t adding more material to move but finally removing what swells, ferments, and turns the intestine into a saturated system?
