Dietary Supplements: Targeted Optimization or Improvised Chemistry?

The gesture seems modern, rational, almost scientific: one capsule for magnesium, another for zinc, a drop of vitamin D, an omega-3, sometimes a B-complex, a green powder, an adaptogen, then a pill to sleep. Everything appears under control. Yet, the more the table looks like a nutritional pharmacy, the more a troubling question arises: is this still optimization, or an attempt to artificially reconstruct what a poor diet no longer provides?
The misunderstanding stems from an overly mechanical view of the human body. We imagine an organism made up of boxes to fill: a bit of iron, a bit of magnesium, a bit of vitamin C, a bit of zinc, as if biology were just an inventory. But the body does not receive nutrients as isolated numbers. It receives them within a digestive, hormonal, enzymatic, inflammatory, and energetic context.
A whole food is not just a nutrient carrier. It is a matrix. Red meat, for example, provides heme iron, zinc, B12, creatine, carnosine, taurine, essential amino acids, selenium, and a protein structure the body recognizes. Liver doesn’t just provide vitamin A or copper. It comes with a biological density that capsules cannot replicate.
The capsule severs the nutrient from its context. It extracts a molecule, concentrates it, standardizes it, then delivers it to the body without the matrix that accompanied it in the food. This doesn’t mean it’s useless. It means it doesn’t follow the same biological logic. Zinc taken alone can disrupt copper balance. Misplaced calcium can hinder absorption of other minerals. Vitamins A, D, and K interact with calcium management, immunity, tissues, and inflammation.
The modern problem is not the existence of supplements. It’s their use as a shortcut. Many people eat a fragile, industrial diet, too low in animal proteins, too rich in processed foods, then try to fix fatigue, hunger, irritability, sleep troubles, or pain by adding pills. But if the body lacks amino acids, salt, natural fats, true satiety, light, sleep, and glycemic stability, the capsule doesn’t repair the foundation. Sometimes it masks a signal.
In a well-constructed carnivore approach, the logic shifts. You don’t start by piling on products. You start by reducing noise: processed foods, sugars, flours, unstable oils, snacking, artificial taste signals. Then you rebuild with dense foods: beef, lamb, eggs if tolerated, fatty fish, organ meats in smart doses, salt, water, marbled cuts, broths. This base provides the body with materials supplements cannot fully imitate.
Supplementation can then become more precise. Vitamin D may make sense if sun exposure is low. An electrolyte can help during a low-carb or carnivore transition if sodium, potassium, or magnesium drop. Glycine can support sleep in certain profiles. Targeted intake can correct a documented deficiency or a particular situation. But order is essential: first dietary coherence, then adjustment. The reverse turns nutrition into chemical tinkering.
The real question is not “Are supplements good or bad?” It’s more demanding: what problem are we trying to solve, and is it really an isolated deficiency? If fatigue comes from a protein shortage, if hunger stems from insulin instability, if sleep suffers from high cortisol, if digestion struggles with excess fermentable residues, then the supplement can become an elegant detour around the real cause.
And what if the best optimization wasn’t adding another molecule, but removing the noise that already prevents the body from properly using what we give it?
