10 Hectares in France: Plant Calories or Truly Complete Food?

On paper, the answer seems straightforward. Take ten hectares. Plant crops. Compare the tons harvested with a pasture where animals graze. Plants often win in sheer volume. But feeding a human being isn’t about producing the most kilos possible. It’s about producing food capable of covering energy, proteins, minerals, vitamins, satiety, resilience, and real survival in a climate that never respects spreadsheets.
The misunderstanding stems from this: we confuse gross agricultural yield with human biological yield. A ton of zucchini, a ton of apples, a ton of wheat, a ton of meat, a ton of eggs, or a ton of liver do not represent the same thing for the body. Weight tells us almost nothing about bioavailability, nutritional density, metabolic stability, or the ability to sustain an organism for months.
Let’s imagine ten French hectares exposed to reality: drought, excessive rain, hail, fungi, pests, temperature fluctuations, labor constraints, irrigation costs, storage, transport. On one side, a permanent pasture with ruminants, some poultry, locally produced hay, manure returned to the soil, the grass-animal-soil cycle. On the other, ten hectares of diversified fruits and vegetables, without heated greenhouses, without massive fertilizer imports, facing the usual open-field risks.
The plant plot can yield a lot of volume. But a large part of that volume is water. Many vegetables are valuable for culinary variety but low in energy and truly complete proteins. Fruits provide carbohydrates, sometimes a lot of fructose, but little protein and almost none of certain critical micronutrients. The problem isn’t that plants are “useless.” The problem is presenting them as a complete answer to human nutrition without considering what’s missing.
The human body needs essential amino acids in sufficient quantities, B12, usable iron, zinc, retinol, choline, DHA, iodine, selenium, structural fats, complete proteins, and lasting satiety. Plants can provide some of these, but often with limitations: non-heme iron less absorbed, zinc inhibited by phytates, plant vitamin A needing conversion to retinol, ALA converted to DHA with variable and often low efficiency, absence of reliable B12 in modern clean agriculture.
The pasture, on the other hand, does something humans cannot do directly: it transforms grass inedible to humans into meat, fat, offal, bones, skin, sometimes milk, eggs via free-range poultry, and thus into highly bioavailable nutrients. The ruminant is not just a meat producer. It’s a biological converter. It takes cellulose, pastures, sometimes difficult-to-cultivate areas, and produces dense food.
The ecological question is more complex than a slogan. Yes, ruminants emit methane. Yes, some livestock systems are bad. But a well-managed permanent pasture is not an industrial cornfield. It protects the soil, limits erosion, maintains deep roots, nourishes microbial life, recycles manure, and can store carbon depending on context. Conversely, intensive vegetable farming can produce a lot but often at the cost of worked soil, irrigation, losses, treatments, nets, plastic, heavy labor, and high vulnerability to hazards.
The debate becomes even more interesting when we look at satiety. A diet rich in meat, eggs, offal, and animal fats feeds with less volume. It provides complete proteins, heme iron, B12, choline, zinc, creatine, carnitine, taurine, and fats essential for hormones. A body satiated by dense foods doesn’t constantly demand extra calories. The animal plot may produce fewer tons, but it produces very powerful metabolic signals.
Conversely, a complete plant system often needs supplementation with cereals, legumes, oils, supplements, fermentation, fortification, and imports. It can work in an industrial society, but it becomes less straightforward when questioning real autonomy. Without industrial B12, imported oils, processed soy, supplements, or a global supply chain, the promise changes.
This is not a blind defense of any livestock farming. It’s an invitation to ask the right question. Off-ground livestock fed with imported cereals doesn’t follow the same logic as a local grazing system. A monoculture under inputs doesn’t compare to a living vegetable garden. But when comparing ten hectares, we must compare complete systems, not caricatures.
The yield that truly matters isn’t just agricultural. It’s biological. How many human bodies can be properly nourished? For how long? With what external dependency? With what hormonal stability? With what micronutrient density? With what resilience to seasons?
Counting tons is easy. Counting what those tons become in blood, muscles, brain, bones, fertility, and human energy is much more serious.
The real question is not: “Who produces the most on ten hectares?” It is: what truly nourishes a human when we remove slogans, abstract calories, and industrial crutches?
